99 SV650 - No Spark

I'm thinking it may be the generator itself. I have continuity on both sides of the generator wires. When I do a peak voltage test,I only see a few mV like you said. I'm doing this with a multi meter set to peak mode. The manual says I should see at least 3.0V though?

Are you using something like this? (I don't know if this is the right kind but they do exist).

I don't think a multi-meter can measure the peak voltage directly, its too fast.
 
Now I'm looking at the diagram and there's two different images. WHICH IS RIGHT?? I'm biased to think Zoran knows wear he's talking about.

EDIT: I see now the first diagram I saw was for 2nd gen. Also connecting O/R to B/W would be connecting ground to ground, which makes sense. So I might be a fuggin idiot. Tomorrow I'll try to redo that part.... hopefully that fixes my problem!

Caveat

BTW, I see now that the '99 year SV650 has a CDI module so that is a bit different than my experience with 2007+ DL models so ignore my comment about the ECU which does not apply.

If you rule out the wiring issues then I would say it is *probably* a bad crankcase sensor or bad ignition module but don't start throwing parts at it based on my guesses ;-) An SV site might be able to tell you which is more common but triple check the wires and connectors/connections. If you can borrow a known good CDI module then you can rule out one or the other.

Does the manual give you a resistance value between the two sensor wires? I just measure the resistance of the sensor on a bad stator I had lying around at 184 ohms (sensor was fine, generator coils were fried). I also measured no continuity between either wire to ground (i.e. infinite resistance).

Its the same test, image 22 just measures the volts at the connector that plugs into the ignition module. If that fails then in image 23 they have you measure the voltage at the stator directly so its just ruling out a bad wire or connector running between the two. You'd still need a peak voltage adapter to get meaningful results.

How many ohms between the sensor wires?

I did have a bad sensor once, caught it with an multi meter, and yes the bike would't start.
 
Is your resistor between o/r and b/w? Or o/r and o/w?

So I had my wiring wrong. I'm an idiot. :rolleyes:laughing

Switched the resistor and O/R wiring coming off the CDI from O/W to B/W (as it should have been from the beginning) and it fired off in under 2 cranks. MAGIC!

Nothing to see here, folks, just an idiot who can't read a wiring diagram.
