A Pox On Metzeler/Pirelli And Their Made In China Tires

update for interest as a consumer and if pirelli peeps are reading this.

Went tubeless on excel 17" sumo rims. thread here if anyone is interested
Fresh set of Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2's. 120/70 front made in Germany, 150/60 rear made in China. Both less than a year old from manufacture.

Beads set at about 45-50lbs without the tubes. RUglyde tire lube. about 85-90 degrees ambient temp. Average difficulty shoeing onto the rims.

So far so good. So by my estimates, it was indeed the tubes that made seating the bead demanding.

I run Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2's as well. The rear was made in Germany, front made in China. I run tubes on 17" wheels and so far I have no complaints...

There is no such tyre as a Pirelli Rosso Corsa 2. Pirelli makes the Rosso 2 (the most road-oriented tyre in their Diablo series), and the Rosso Corsa (more track-oriented than the Rosso 2, but less than the Supercorsa).

To add another datum point, I got the Rosso 2 last month and both front (120/70-17) and back (180/55-17) are made in Germany.

Ah yeah sorry. Rosso 2. I get the rosso corsa mixed up.

On anycase, it all translates to "overpriced" in italian.

Had another Chinese made Metzeler install fail today.

Metzeler M5 front on a Apr Shiver, tire manufacture date code 0614.

Grrrrr :mad

The Rosso II's that came on my bike and the ones that I bought as replacements were made in Germany.

How did it fail?

Bead won't pop up and seat on the wheel even with extra lube and 100psi.

Refer to beginning of thread for details.

Fwiw this was an older 2014 tire from early production runs in China. Newer production has been less of a problem.

Its on my bike. It would have been the third M5 front tire on it, but no. The old M5 was made in Germany and I bought all of 'em from the same place The Motorcycle Superstore. So, I called them and we had a polite conversation about it and they want to send the tire back to where they got it from for assessment before they might give me a refund. They said they would let me know in 6 or 8 weeks. This makes me annoyed.

I'll try to attach a pic

The rear is an almost new metzler M5. I'm looking at a Bridgestone Hypersport S20 EVO on the cycle gear and revzilla websites, does anyone know if this is a good choice?

Love the S20 EVO I'm running on the front of the DR350 supermoto, but admittedly it was somewhat of a stubborn bead to pop due to (my guess?) stiffer sidewalls. Once I let the tire sit in the sun and used a little extra lube, it gave way around 60psi.

well, make sure you let them know I and anyone else I know will not be buying tires from them if that's how they do things. :thumbdown

had good experiences with revzilla. prices are fair and close to what everyone else charges.

their returns are easy, too.

I ordered the bridgetone S20 Evo from Cycle Gear, I think they might be better if there is an issue, and they were super nice on the phone.

Seems like an easy answer...stop buying Pirelli/Metzeler, email them telling them so, demand better Q.A.

Just because Metz sponsers Isle of Man doesnt mean I am going to accept chinese junk...

I ride on Michelin Pilot Road 4s bought locally...they rock the hot sauce...

update bump.

Shoed on some Rosso 3's on the tard. Used the No-Mar tire lube. It's my preferred tire lube now. It stays exactly where you put it, and it's slick as snot. No more RUglyde for me.

Both tires were made this year. Got em from motorcycle-superstore

Rear: made in China. Install was normal. Bead sat at 40lbs

Front: Made in Germany. Install was normal.
Now get this, the bead sat 15lbs. And instead of a loud snap it was a soft thunk. This is a 120/70 17" on a 3.5" rim. It could be the tire construction or i just got lucky. In any case everything is fine.

Put a new set of Rosso II on my FZ09 a week or 2 ago and the beads popped on at less than 20psi. It was pretty strange. Love the tires though.

If made in Germany tires don't seat with a loud snap, how can you trust them to actually have seated properly without a patriotic retort?

So Pirelli has tire plants in both places and it's just the luck of the draw which ones get pulled for you off the rack when you place an order?

The Rosso II's that I bought earlier this year were both made in Germany.
