RESOLVED THANK YOU>

Last week one of the Zombies from the neighborhood wheeled an old Suzuki motorcycle into our driveway. I did not witness this act but I have been observing the slow migration of this thing for the past 3 months up a mile long stretch of road.

My question is this:
Since the motorcycle is on private property the police say it is a civil matter.
The tow company will tow it away but I will be responsible for the costs of towing and storage.
I do not have time to chase this thing around the DMV and I doubt it has any significant value.
Can I just give it away?

I just want to "free to good home" it: but, I don't want to go to jail because of it.

I think you can charge a reasonable storage fee, then lien sale it when the owner doesn't pick it up. But you may also have to attempt to notify the registered owner of your intentions.

Take all of that for what it's worth, though, as I am not a LEO.

I'd hate to be the person who ends up with it, then finds out it's stolen. Maybe one of our BARF LEOs could run the VIN for you and tell you if it's stolen or not.

That's what I'm hoping the vin is hard to read and I can't get a good picture of it.

I wonder if they can run an engine number?

G: Send me a copy of the vin.

My guess is that's its been out of the system so long, it won't show anything. However, I'll do some digging.

If there's no owner, I'd go down to DMV and have it put into your name as a non-op.

Once it's in your name, you can do as you please.

Thanks I'm trying to get the vin now

The year is partially blocked on the plate but the color looks red (current 2016)?

Maybe the zombies are saying "fix this for us and we won't eat you when the apocalypse comes"?

Flag down one of those scrap metal guys with an old beat up pickup and let them haul it away. (Assuming there's no way to contact the "owner".)

Updated OP and PM on its way. :thumbup

I heard somewhere with a set of wrenches, a portable bandsaw and a little time in the evenings you could recycle an entire motorcycle in a curbside cart. Not that, you know, I would ever do such a thing. Certainly not on the record at least. Need to borrow my bandsaw? :teeth

Haha! I threw away an entire VW Bug that way. I mean, I might have. :rofl

How many people did it take to lift & carry it to the edge of the cliff, and did it have gas & did you keep the gas cap on? :teeth

It was my friends 1st car, & he hated it. When he finally got a 72' Camaro SS we had a field trip to the local (Alburn) rock quarry. Drove up to the edge, used a 2x4 between gas pedal & seat, tossed it in gear, & watched it fly off the cliff w/all of us laughing our asses off (too many beers = hilariously.)

Then the stupid thing "drove" (rolled on wheels) all the way to the bottom of the 400ft. cliff gaining speed the whole way, engine throwing smoke all the way. = Thud! Big front ender into the ground....disappointing....sniff. :cry

When an opportunity comes along like this one, I generally take the vin information (along with my driver's license) to the local CHP and ask them if I should purchase this vehicle. They run it and tell me if it is listed as stolen at that time. They are used to seeing me there. As far as getting it in your name, there is a 10 day lien sale (non-reparable title) and 30 day lien sale. After that, it is up to you. DMV fees can get expensive if it isn't on non-op, but the max is 3 years, plus the current year. I usually do a statement of facts, REG 256 and ask for the fees to be waived.

Found the owner and gave the bike along with spared to a fellow BARFer.
