I really need new summer weight riding gloves. As a Professional Pillion, are there any types of gloves that are better or worse? Anything not needed? Does it matter that I'm a pillion and not a pilot? I'm also buying on a budget, so no bling. Also, I don't buy leather. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

What if someone else buys the leather for you?

When we hit the pavement...we are all, not pilots or pillions...we are Pavement Surfers.

i can't think of a single reason y a passenger shouldn't have as much protection as a pilot.

Find something that fits well, that you'd be confident wearing in the event of a mishap, and something that you'll wear.. :p

Thanks guys, exactly what I was looking for.

Sales guy last year at gear shop to remain un-named, told me, "If you're just on the back it really doesn't matter what gloves you wear."

ud think that, as a salesman, the guy would want to push the latest-and-greatest, most expensive gloves that he had in stock. seems that guy failed on two accounts... watching out for a fellow rider and at his job. :laughing

it took me like 2yrs to get permission from my gf to buy her gloves. i finally had to give her an ultimatum... "im not taking you for a ride unless u wear gloves". getting her to wear boots was even harder.

Sales guy is obviously an idiot.

Why no leather? It's the best material, hands down. (No pun intended.)

My sister asked if she could go for a ride, I said sure. She asked if she could wear heels since she just got a pedicure. I said no. :x
So I went riding, and she stayed home :party

If you're looking for something summer-specific, make sure it's preforated. It feels nice to have air moving through your hands when it gets hot. Many times I'll coast down a hill and wave both hands around to get the cooling effect :banana

to a certain extent, a pillions gloves don't have to do all the things a pilots gloves do.
A pillion still needs good protection in event of a get off, but they aren't as worried about feel or vibration dampening.

that being said gloves are a really personal thing, some little thing that annoys can make an otherwise great pair of gloves unusable. go some place that has a wide selection and try on many different pairs. Buying a cheap pair to start might be good so you can wear them and see what things are deal makers or breakers in gloves. As you gain experince you find the gloves that have the fit and features you like.

in other words, your gonna go through a lot of gloves before you find the right pair, at least I did.

Any advice: I did buy heavily perforated ICON gloves for a pillion.

Gloves tore apart at the cotton parts.. From gentle wearing 5("like") times ! ! ! ! End of advice.

Also, I don't buy leather. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I am guessing moral, ethical, vegetarian reasons for no leather? I am pseudo veggie (I eat fish and dairy) and I understand your concern but I would reconsider the no leather especially for gloves.

A friend had a get off in some summer weight A*s that were textile and they were SHREDDED. He messed up his fingers pretty bad. My winter gloves are textile but they are beefy enough I don't worry. I would be wary of lightweight
textile gloves.

No leather because I prefer not to wear animal products. Synthetic leather is fine! I didn't know anyone made hemp gloves.

Thanks for that link, Mike, those look perfect. :thumbup

I've ridden in heals before. A long time ago on the Harleys and twice on the BMW when I first started on it. I much prefer my actual riding boots. I'd never ride in heals now. I :love my gear. :thumbup

Although, my thigh-high boots do fit under my riding pants. :boobies

Yes, the sales guy did fail on both!

I understand the preference for not wearing leather products, but please, please make an exception for gloves. Anywhere else, well fitting textiles are a good choice, the additional bulk and lower abrasion resistance can compensated for, but the same is not true in gloves. When you can't touch anything because your hands are shredded from an accident, life sucks. Showering, using the restroom, typing on the internet, eating, getting dressed, etc.

Even leather sometimes isn't enough abrasion resistance in gloves, there is absolutely no way I would consider textile gloves an acceptable compromise for street riding.

The gloves I posted are synthetic leather. Textile is not the only non-leather option.
