DL389

The MSF office you used should be mailing you DL389 to you within 7-10 days. With this in hand, when you go to the DMV, take the written test, and if you pass, you get your M1 endorsement on your license, (you do have a drivers license right?). This is only the beginning. You just took the BASIC riders course. Keep practicing. There is an experienced riders course in which you use your own bike, but you must be riding for about 6 months and have a couple of thousand miles under your belt. Now zoomzoom, a track-day company, has a new program they are starting up for those wondering ' what now after I've passed the BRC'. This is a new program and there is little info on it, but you can check it out on their website.
Good luck and be careful

do you know if there is a time limit from when you get the MSF cert until you do the rest of the DMV steps (written test, etc)?

i finally talked a friend into taking the MSF class, she passed the class back in June but has been too busy traveling the world to get to the DMV, she doesn't think she'll get back to the bay area until after Xmas.

Actually, you were supposed to have your written permit before you took the MSF, I think. Now that you passed the course, I'd say go to the DMV and take the written test, get your permit on the spot, and then go back the next week with DL389 in hand and get your license.

I don't think there is a time limit for the DL389.

Congrats, best thing you could have done. My wife did it and went the next day to take her test. As for the length, I don't think there is a time limit, but probably can find out by calling the MSF school folks.

Once i got my DL389 form i took it straight to DMV and took the written test to get my permit. But man, I did know that test was that hard. Cause at MSF i only missed 2 qustions out of 50. So after all i didnt passed to written test and i have to wait a week and retake it.

Did you guys have to same problem with the test at DMV?

in CA, you dont need a permit to take the MSF. Save the trip. You only need to go to the DMV once for the license.

Take MSF, wait 2 weeks for DL389, take it to DMV and take the written, if you pass they give you your license on the spot.

The test was easy, I think I only missed one. What did you miss?

You do not need a motorcycle permit to take the class. All you need is a basic license from damn near anywhere. If you are able to legally operate a vehicle on the roads of CA, then you have what it takes to participate in the class.

The DL389 does not expire.

The CA motorcycle handbook is slightly confusing me in regards to the license requirements. I have a permit, I am taking the MSF class this weekend. When I get the DL389, I just have to pass another written test?

the dmv written test is different from the msf written test. The only thing the DL389 does is waive the dmv riding test.

you'll probably have to take half of the regular driving test, as well.

The test you took to get the CA M/C Permit IS the written test for getting a motorcycle license. Since you already have a CA M/C permit, once you get the DL389, all you have to do is take it to the DMV and they will waive the riding test and give you a license.

totally forgot... i think the "half of the driver's test" is taken when you take your written test for the permit. listen to enchanter, he knows all! :thumbup

Here is what ocyras is referring to:
When get taking the M1 test for a Permit or License, you will be required to renew your other license(s) if they have not been renewed within the last 12 months. So...study up!

BTW - If you think you might fail the DMV written test, try the practice tests first.

They're available online: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/interactive/tdrive/exam.htm

I found the actual test quite easy (I ended up getting docked for only one answer which I still think I answered correctly :laughing)

I do recommend that you read the handbook before attempting the test. (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl655/dl665mcycle.pdf)

The MSF curriculum is also great for preparation for the test, but I took my permit test before the MSF.

Wow, I didn't realize I was this close to my license. Yes, I took the written test and renewed my C license for the permit, so when I get the DL389, I have the M1.
I did the classroom portion tonite, riding Saturday and Sunday morning. The instructor seems pretty laid back.
