No more than paintball. It's more of a sting than the whack of a paintball. And with the FPS limits established in the Bay Area it's not likely to cause any blood blisters. The worst injuries I've seen in airsoft were chipped teeth

Stock AEGs will easily range 100 feet. Upgraded, 150+ feet. Sniper rifles are capable of over 200. Not great but certainly no worse than paintball.

What you see in the pictures are Load Bearing Equipment/Vests and are primarily used to carry spare magazines, batteries, BBs, food, water, etc. It's not there to provide any sort of armor.
The agreed upon "Minimum Engagement Distance" in the Bay Area is about 25 feet. Within 25 feet you can either draw and shoot him with your sidearm, surrender your opponent (only if it's a complete surprise), or use the parlay rule which requires both players to walk back 100 feet and re-engage. Rules vary but most teams play by those rules.
Shooting somebody point-blank will guarantee that you'll get blacklisted from games, and with the airsoft community being very tight-knit, that's almost a ban from playing airsoft. That and cheating are sins in this sport that relies on an extreme honor code and high levels of sportsmanship.
