I just bought a bike for $1000. Registration expired in 2011. I figured it'd be about $150 to get it up to date. I know I could have checked the actual fee online before hand, but I had bought a bike 5 years out of registration before so I knew the general cost. It was still worth the price either way.

Well, it wasn't $150. It was $335. The registration is 1/3 of the value of the bike. That seems like some excessive fees for two missed registrations, but I'm no state budget planner. In fact, one of the (many) fees is equal to two years worth of registration.

If you plan to let a bike sit for a few years, please register it as non-op. It's about $20 and will save you or someone else hundreds of dollars.

The vehicle fees in CA are absurd, but I hear there are a few states that are even worse. My truck is 22 years old, and I still pay $100 a year to register it. I've paid almost half it's original price in DMV fees over the years. And I have 6 vehicles, so I pay serious $$$$ every year. Fucking painful.

My situation was worse. I had let it expire and SFPD stuck a gun in my face.
Bureaucrats and their parasitical fees - serious business. Our rebellious forefathers in Indian costumes would not be pleased.

sorry to hear about the DNC woes...

All these fees and the roads are going to shit.

That doesn't sound right. Seems it should be $100 + 80% of the normal tag fee.

Haha, no Rod, see what you're doing is logical.

All those fees add up. So the 1-10 day fee is added to the 11-30 day fee which is added to the 31 days-1 year fee, etc.

I haven't done it yet (haven't had a chance to go to the DMV), I just used their online calculator.

yuo shoudl also keep it registered because at some point if you're caught driving on expired tags they can tow it on the spot instead of just citing you for it. 6 months past maybe?

can you elaborate a bit?

Pulled over on TI with expired registration.

At least one of the cops had his gun pointed at me while I had to hold my jacket up and twirl like a ballernina.

I also had to lay on the ground. Something hard was put against the back of my head - gun or baton, not sure.

They thought I was trying to break into the coast guard base.:party

You'll be paying the back registration fees as well as penalties. So, if this year's fee is $100 you'll pay that. Last year was $110 - that'll be added on as well as the late fees for the year. The prior year was $120 - again, that gets added on, along with the late fees - so you're looking at over $300 NOT INCLUDING late fees. Why people don't take advantage of the PNO option just boggles the mind!

$1 bike had $455 in reg and taxes due :laughing

Whoops.

That doesn't sound right at all. It should only be the 31-365 fee for the year that was missed and then any new fees. The fees structure for the year missed aren't (and shouldn't be) cumulative.

My F4 was a lien sale and had like 3 years back reg on top of that and it was $475 or something. ~$285 of that was the lien portion of it.

But yeah, I don't buy anything without looking at the reg any more because of my F4. The whole back reg fees are B.S. It wasn't mine then why should I pay for someone else?! Particularly if it wasn't even being ridden/driven.

how can anyone say they did not know about paying the "fee"???
here in Ca you get the bill three months before it is due.
just received the bill for a per trailer tag $10.00 usd and due 10/31/2012
easy money for the state as the trailer has not moved a foot (anywhere) in three years. sold off the quad.

how can it be a permanent tag if i have to pay more every so many years??

just look at the new fire tax. gov brown out brown is going to use it to help close the over spending in sac. not to pay for fire fighting.

tax and spend.

lets try cutting the spending first. just 5% off every dept budget, and ALL elected officials do not get a pay check or perks. (aka all the tax payer paid freebies).

Everybody wants everything for free. "I'm a rich snob with 6 vehicles and bitch about paying my share of road maintenance." Just putting things into perspective.

It would be nice if they used the money for the roads, rather than siphoning it off for other things.
