another car thread: new, econobox x2

test drove a stripped down 5 speed FIT last night. felt fine to me, wife not impressed.

ford dealer didn't even assault us, perhaps they liked the warmth of the showroom? we were in the showroom too and not even a halfassed attempt at contact. did sales tactics change since the last time i bought a car 10 years ago?

It really depends on the dealership AB.

Some are high pressure and some are laid back.

I despise high pressure dealerships.

So what didn't the wifey like about it? Too noisy? Not comfy enough? Curious, as this is one of the econo boxes I am considering as well.

it doesn't feel like the 2001 s4 she's been driving, and doesn't look good.

i did the driving, felt comfy in the driver seat. shuffled all the seats around and sat behind the passenger with the front seat adjusted to have adequate room for my knees. back room was not cavernous but i'd have been fine driving to reno.

i was ok with the power as well. clutch and shift felt funny but that's more due to not being familiar with them. freeway ability is fine.

I think they have changed a bit with so many people complaining about being assaulted with sales people as soon as they step on the lot.

i think i need a middle ground. honda guy came up and asked if we wanted to see anything specific, then went away while we kicked tires for a bit.

Thanks for the feedback. My hesitation with the fit is that I think that my wife would REALLY like something that is both quiet and comfortable. She also wants something small. Unfortunately, most cars that fit into all three of those categories are much higher performance than she would want/use. Oh well, guess we'll keep looking to find the perfect commuter for the wife. In the meantime, she enjoys the Mazda 3 well enough. It's a pretty good little car, for the money. 135K on it and no issues. Gotta love that.

If you wanna go Ford, shoot me a PM and I'll get you in touch with my people.

What sorts of deal can "your people" work out? I am silly enough to consider a Ford, even though I have already owned a couple of them over the years. :laughing

compard to the 3 series mazdas i've been in, the fit feels like an empty tuna can. being the uber base model, it might have been a little noisier than the nicer trim levels i don't know. personally i didn't find it loud at all but my DD is loud as hell. i wear earplugs.

Im 6'3'' and I fit in a Miata.

ghey joke

thanks. we have usaa and costco options to explore too.

this whole "planning and researching" to buy a car thing is so weird to me. i'm an impulse kind of guy.

The planning and research will pay dividends when car shopping, for sure.

I'm 6'3 1/2" and I don't.

Head bulges into convertible top. Knees constantly hitting non adjustable steering wheel.

hahah, you called kyle short

speaking of steering wheels, that reminds me of some pertinient FIT info: the driver seat had no height adjustment and i'm a farily long torso/short leg 6"0'. i couldn't see the top half of the instrument cluster because the steering wheel perfectly blocked it

also, the focus is suuuuuuuper easy to get in/out of. the way they hinged the doors it's as if they were desinging for people that couldn't bend in the middle and i thank them for it

oh also, since the surprise audi problems that spurred this turned out to be a case of "i can't afford to buy cheap parts" grrrrrr

we're only looking for one car now. would still like to keep it around 20k OTD though. i know, fat chance

Excellent info. I'm only 5'11", but I have a long torso and short legs, as well. I don't think I'm going to bother checking out the Fit, then. The Focus is a decent little car, in spite of the fact that it's a Ford. Maybe we'll check them out.

fusion is out of our budget from the get go.

i'm leery of ford myself, due to the 1996 ranger i had new back in the day. the check engine light was always on. it didnt' really effect anything, but the dealers were incapable of fixing the problem and mostly blamed me or my driving style. style being things like "did you use more than 3/4 of the tank of gas?" "did you have any large changes in elevation?"

so, i can't use the whole tank of gas or drive to tahoe?

lame.

it was the first year of OBDII though, and ford has made huge progress according to the press.

aaron: if you're able to get the higher trim levels the seat might have more adjustability as well as the steering wheel? i don't know and didn't ask.

They start at what? 23k? Im sure you can negotiate it to near 20.

And I <3 my 1994 Ranja. Things rock solid, as im slowly fixing all the issues.

Well you wouldn't get my deal...I reserve pulling that trump card for a deal that I would personally oversee. But you'll get a lowest we can go, no back and forth haggling, take it or leave it kinda deal. Which is really nothing more than me putting you together with my Internet manager.

And if you just wanna come down and drive some shit and kick some tires, my name mentioned might get you a bit more attention.

Excellent to know. I am not looking to buy for at least 6 months, but will send you a PM when the time comes to seriously start kicking tires and such. If I do it now I would just be wasting everyone's time.

I know you want to buy new but have you considered something like a used 2008 low mileage Acura TSX?

Could pick up one of those for under $17k from a dealer and less from a private party.

25mpg around town, 32mpg on a road trip with lots of freeway miles.

Sweet 6 speed manual tranny and all the comfort a normal human being would want.

Uber reliable.

new isn't a requirement so much anymore. certified used is OK too. good commute-ability and a warranty/reliability are paramount.

i'd like to see a little better than 25mpg around town, but if we see one around we'll take a look.

any idea how prevalent the 6 speed manual was when they were new? autos dominate the new car lots unless it's some special model.

AB, if thinking slightly used and being an Audi guy, how about an A3 TDI quatro? A bit above the $20K budget on my wholesale numbers, not too far off...and you seem to like the Audi product (of which I think that model is excellent).
