Anthony Bourdain - RIP

Guy spent his career teaching the world that you can find common ground with anyone as long as you're willing to sit down and have a meal with them.

RIP Tony.

Seems a bit selfish when you can’t see how good you have it.

That's quite the relative statement. We only know his public persona and what of his personal life he made public. Aka, we don't know shit about the guy. Regardless, very very sad for his friends and family.

Mental illness blocks the view of the trees in a forest

Could it be that we are the ones who are selfish, wanting people to stay on this earth and continue to live a pained life?

if you speak to people who have taken drugs to treat mental illness, you will find that the drugs take away the ability to feel. there is no cure or treatment for mental illness without side effects. if it was an addiction that was his downfall, then one would have to have some inner strength to fight it. for some, maybe it is not worth fighting for

Mikey that's the part that bothers me the most too. One of my closest friends lost his dad to suicide as a kid and the scar is still pretty raw to this day.

Yeah, man. I mean, I fully understand that I don't get what would cause someone to do this, but the kids.... I've had the conversation with my ex if something should happen to me at work. But how to you even talk to your kids about something like this. I wouldn't even know where to start.

God damn, that is a fucking shame. I can remember seeing some of these competitive food cooking shows, and he was on the guest Judge panel. You would get these uptight restaurant reviewer foodie cats up there talking about, "The color of the egg foam is too far off the traditional seafoam green expected and the shades of celery green is off putting to the eye," and he would be all, "Fuck you, you're an idiot, this is delicious, get over that shit."

I enjoyed the hell out of that.

His passion for exploring other cultures and experiencing real food with real people, getting to know the locals with an unbridled sense of culture and adventure, he really on many levels represented to me what was best about New Yorkers.

I know he just went through a 2nd Divorce like a year and a half ago, apparently he was working in France when this shit went down. Hope he has rest now, it is a damn shame. RIP. :rose

Very, very sad news....

Worked with him in February of '93 when he was one of the celebrity chefs at a food wine event in the Carmel Highlands, way before the books and tv shows. He had a great sense humor, gotta kick out of every time we called him "dude" (So Californian!)... he was what you saw on TV.

As Butch said, if you want a good read, "Kitchen Confidential" is a great insight into the culinary world, and why people go into it....

By our posts I'm not sure we have much in common other than eastern WA, but I agree with your sentiment.

edit: I too loved his show

Apparently he quit smoking last year for her sake, so, I don't know, some shit must have gone down.

R. I . P.
"he's irreverent, honest, curious, never condescending, never obsequious," the judges said. "people open up to him and, in doing so, often reveal more about their hometowns or homelands than a traditional reporter could hope to document."

in 2013, peabody award judges honored bourdain and "parts unknown" for "expanding our palates and horizons in equal measure."

Yet another reminder that, for humans, finding contentment is kind of mysterious. It is really hard, from the perspective of my life circumstances, to not think he kind of had it made. He had set things in motion with his book and career to where he got paid to go around the world and eat and drink. Sounds spectacular. But he obviously managed to find unhappiness amidst that.

With Robin Williams, we came to understand that his debilitating disease was ongoing and life was definitely gonna get worse and worse. I dunno about Bourdain, but it just seems crazy. And I find myself resentful on behalf of the daughter as well. I could never do that to my kids at that tender age.

RIP.

A damn shame, super interesting guy who gave us culture, cuisine, history, humor. From the outside it looked like he had life by the balls and was living the dream. Mental illness/depression can take over anyone evidently.

Apparently his buddy Eric was the one who found him - sad - those shows with the Bourdain/Eric Ripert double act are some of the best.
