Anthony Bourdain - RIP

RIP, he seems like an interesting guy who lived his life well, and positively affected a large number of people. Armchair quarterbacking your views on the morality of his decision to end his life, in a online RIP thread, strikes me as a less desirable way to live one's life.

Both members mentioned bouts of depression yet patience was in short supply when communicating with each other. Seems depression and impatience go hand in hand. Maybe one of the reasons depressed people don't see the answer is reaching out to each other.

I don't know if it's so much that depression and impatience go hand in hand, but it's worth knowing that people who are depressed -and I'm one of them- are hurting quite a lot of the time. People making negative judgment about suicide, especially somewhat flippant ones the likes of which have been made here, cut right to the bone. It hurts. It really hurts.

I'm blessed to be on an upswing right now. It gives me a lot more space to forgive.

Seems a bit selfish when you can’t see how good you have it.

You don't know what demons he was fighting and what turn of events led to him hanging himself. Most people look at depressed folks functioning and say "You are okay and having a good time, you have no right to be depressed", when they have no idea what internal turmoil and domestic life is for that person - famous or not. But I guess passing judgement makes us feel better about ourselves, no?

I think there are a lot of assholes in the thread.......and those would be the ones in a pissing match in a RIP thread.......real classy people.....

"Seems" was the key word you may have missed. As in something may appear to be different than it really is.
I never made any judgment about AB but it "seems" you've made one about me. Nothing I've posted here makes me feel better or worse about myself.

i think anyone struggling with depression has a valid point in this thread. among that population, i would not call those who are pressing for their point of view to be accepted as the ultimate truth to be assholes because it is the truth to them.

but for those who do not struggle from depression and draw a quick conclusion about another who is struggling (or has struggled) with depression is not being fair. that whole expression about not being in someone's shoes applies to many situations, we don't know the others internal dialogue ...

under the umbrella of mental illness: some people have bipolar disorder or a chemical imbalance. these things are not brought on by some kind of traumatic event or drawn out circumstances in their lives. the cause behind one individual's depression could likely be a complex one and so is the desire (or lack of) behind seeking help

I'm sad that there won't be any new episodes from far away places with interesting folks.

Also sad that there won't be any new Robin Williams movies or comedy.

Or any new Tom Petty music.

Super sad that I can't have a beer with Cygnus ever again.

Cherish what you have right now, today!

:teeth

Suicide, I understand.

Suicide when you have an 11 year old child whom you love with all your heart? I guess I can still understand.

Suicide by hanging oneself? I will never understand.

Why would someone choose to go in such a violent, painful manner when there are several other ways to leave this world peacefully and quietly. Especially if you have money and connections.

Doesn't compute.

Errr..."doesn't compute" may simply mean your programmer didn't program you well.

: | ;)

We don't know, OK.

Anyway. Still, it's an 11 year old, and from a divorced one, not a younger one. : |

Actually I am wondering about a connection to Kate Spade. I think both were from NYC.

Judgementusual :rolleyes

Not judging him at all, as I don't know him from Adam. I was stating what I thought from watching him on TV. His TV persona came across to me as very arrogant a lot of the time. My perception. Not saying that's who/what he was. None of us have any clue what most celebrities are really like in real life. He could have been an awesome person or a total asshole.

I really enjoyed his show and the way he could sit down with just about anyone and a meal and a good time. For him to be pretty much broke years ago and then make it all the way up like he did should have helped a little. RIP, dude

I'm going to celebrate his life forever.

Can't wait to start in 2 weeks when I go to Montreal and eat at Pied du Cochon.

food, culture, politics, food, culture, food... no one has done this reporting like Bourdian.

He created a new genre. He did not try to do this. It just happened. Brilliant.
There will be no equal.

Those people he sat down with weren't chosen at random. I'd often watch his show but wasn't buying that things were as they were made out to be. Often the setup was over the top and playing to preconceived exaggerated ideas of what a place was like. I had lived in and visited a few of the places he profiled and the few people he'd interview obviously gave a narrow view of life there.

But I still watched and enjoyed knowing that it was really no more than just dudes hanging out and bull shitting.

He got to enjoy life more than many who live longer ever will.

Here is another thing that I find incredible.

How can Iggy Pop have no tattoos?

:teeth
