Non-Asians, please don’t over-buy Asian culture. There’s a lot of good things about it and a lot of shitty things about it.
I remember I was in an”Asians in America” class and we got to the Filipino part. Some white chick came up to me after class and payed out a huge apology on behalf of her white race
I chose not to tell her about all the Filipino men who have secret wives/families in the islands, or the general shaming/gossip culture of the women.
That being said, I was called gook during a paintball game when I was a kid. I had to look up what a gook was because I grew up focusing more as me as a person over me as a Filipino, and racism wasn’t on the main line. That kid is now my friend as adults and I respect him as a man.
When we were kids, it mattered more you were a surfer/skater/BMX’er/jock etc. and it didn’t matter what your skin color was. I wish it was still like that from all aspects.
It wasn’t until college when the Filipinos came up to me and were like “you wanna join our Filipino group?” And I’m like “why?”

I never looked at my “Filipino’ness” until other Filipinos told me I should. White folks attempted to do to that all the time by trying to impress me “I had a Filipino friend once!” And I’m like “wwwwoowwwww.”
My dad was called white washed a lot when he was in college by other Filipinos. White men befriended him and were his work colleagues and promoted him to high levels in management. This was in the 1960’s. So if there was any hate, it was from other Filipinos.
Don’t know what this has to do with this thread, but DataDan made a great point that 1) we have to make considerations for the mentally in and 2) I’ve had more violence towards me in my life from non-whites. White people have always been good to my family, even going back to the 1930’s.
Like I said, I’ve had more discrimination and hate towards me because I’m Catholic.
