So I let a Domain expire, as the auto renewal card it was on had changed and the day after the expiration a company names "New Ventures Services Corp" grabbed up the domain. They have no reason to grab this domain. I've used Network solutions as the registrant, but as it looks like New Ventures and Network solutions are cohoots, I'm switching...of course the Network Solutions had the number and info handy on how to "buy your domain back". Convenient, no?

Any info from anyone would be enlightening...

There are countless companies and individuals who will snap up any domain they think someone might want. Expired domains are prime targets.

Yep.

It may be worth checking what they want to ransom it back to you, but in most cases it just isn't worth it.

Best to start looking for a new domain name to register, unless you have significant IP/recognition vested in the old one.

Berto, The domain registration business is a very seedy one and filled with bottom-feeders.

Most of them won't do a full registration, they'll just hold it for a few days then cancel out of it in time to get their registration fee back (it's just a few pennies for companies registered as domain registrars) so that they can play this game with thousands of domain names. It's a shitty rule that allows them to cancel out of it and only benefits scum like these people. And, yes, all of the places that offer 'whois' services (Aside from the root registrar - interNic, to my knowledge) are turning around and either selling the information on what domains people are checking out or using it themselves under a different name.

The best advice I can give you is to use GoDaddy's Backorder Service which gets the domain the next time it gets released (often in a few days).

Good luck!

p.s. Apparently Network Solutions and this company (probably owned by the same people, or at least a very cosy relationship) have been doing this sleazy business for years now, just search on google and there are numerous complaints about some very questionable things happening. Why anybody would stick with Network Solutions is beyond me, they are dirty, greed and obviously ready to rip you off at the first opportunity.

Yes, they are sleeping together. Your mistake was not renewing in time. This is nothing like the dot-com era. I spent tens of thousands to protect names and variations of names. Prices were MUCH higher and thieves were relentless. Buy the dang name. It's not that expensive.
