If so, how long before you were able to ride again? I had my L5/S1 done Monday morning and I'm in painful recovery right now. I've been walking outside to look at the bike, but given the way I feel, it's hurts to even imagine sitting on it, much less riding it.

Curious how long other moto riders have taken to recover from this type of surgery.

Yikes. Good luck with your recovery. I haven't had disc issues, but I did fall off a cliff and shatter L5 as a teenager. I find that I have to wear a kidney belt on long, esp. multi-day rides, and I need bodywork (acupuncture, chiropractic, and/or massage) periodically to keep myself out of most pain.

I had L5/SI done on June 26, 2007 and started riding again in mid-August or so of that year. But I was also able to come home the night of the surgery and was in far less pain the moment I woke up than the 3-6 months before.

Good luck with your recovery. It can be done and you will feel better again.

I was hoping to ride in about a month, but that might be optimistic. I've got some track days planned for mid November and December that I'm hoping to still do, if I get full strength back by then.

my wife had it done and was back to moving around in about a month and a half, unfortunetly it didnt work for her and had a triple fusion after that but is making a good pain free recovery now.

good luck and take care of your back,it's the only one you have:teeth

Yow! Best of luck with a speedy and successful recovery. It had to have been bad to go that route, so I hope it gets you relief.

good luck with your back and recovery!
We all feel for you.
The flesh is weak, but the spirit is strong for sure. I guess that is just how it is.

Still comfortable enough to argue with me on Crash Analysis, though... right, Archie? :teeth

Take it easy and don't push things. It would be a shame if you injured it for a trackday.

Get well soon!

:laughing "everyone should just disconnect their rear brakes!"

Take care and get well soon Archimedes.

L5-S1 herniated disc here. had it done Aug 2006. took 7 days just to get up from the bed by myself. 2 weeks for the wound to heal.

healing process is case to case basis. but the key is NOT to do things that your not supposed to do during healing time. you want the wound to heal nicely.

get well soon. its like gazillion times better now after the surgery aint it?

Well the only things they told me not to do is sit for more than 20 minutes at a time and not to bend or stoop. I was out of bed walking around the day of the surgery (Monday) and have spent all week half in bed and half walking around.

It's been four days and I'm still stiff and pretty sore. My only real concern is that I am getting sharp shooting pains once in a while down the affected leg when I turn in a certain way, as if the nerve was still affected. Happens about 10 times a day.

The doc did tell me that it would take a while for the nerve inflammation to go down, but I didn't expect sharp pains.

wow.. thats unusual. after the procedure, aside from the wound, i felt a big relief. i did not experience any of those sharp shooting pains anymore. my back was still stiff and sore but no more nerve pains.
it's usually the disc that is pinching the nerve causing those sharp pains, once decompressed or no more pressure on the nerves, you should feel better. if nerves are inflamed then maybe you could ask for anti-inflammatory meds for the time being.

Had the same L5-S1 surgery. Wasn't allowed to get in a car after I got home for 4 weeks. Had 2.5 weeks of physical therapy after that and then was back at work. Was suppose to be out of work for 14 weeks but was only out 7 weeks because I worked so hard to get back into shape. Everyone's different. Good luck.

Ouch man. My advice, since this has happened in my family before, is to take an easy recovery. Its gonna be some time, but if you push yourself too hard, you will reinjure yourself, and then your donezo for good.
