I'm starting to build one. Looked into the market, and the options seem to be rotted out garbage for $1k, future rotted out garbage for $5k, or high end units for $20-30k.

I've been a carpenter and electrician for years, and my dad is a wooden boat builder. Going to make something nice here. :)

hey, when you're done you wanna take a crack at making something that fits a Subaru Baja? :)

Gas ones are underpowered too-a popular mod is to put a subaru motor in 'em.

For what OP described any diesel domestic sleeper van would do the job better for cheaper.

There's a shop in monterey that does legal 1.8t swaps too.

What's your weight limit?

I'm building mine to live on a 1-ton dually, so I'm not particulary concerned if it ends up weighing 3500-4000# all kitted out. The commercially available fiberglass and cardboard ones tend to be around 2000-2500.

I specifically remember being stuck behind one on the way to Yosemite and that was 25yrs ago. It was a diesel and shit was just pouring out the back as it struggled to maintain 35mph up the hills. Do not want.

Sweet! No doubt you can spend that much. I want something fairly simple and lightweight for a tacoma sized truck. There is quite a variety out there, and i am just starting to look.

These are great, as it's all aluminum. No wood at all.

However, i think i am leaning towards a popup model for even less weight and more efficiency. Still looking for an all aluminum popup.

was thinking something on the lines of this since the Baja has such a short bed:

Horrible idea. Notice how that thing is utterly crushing that car's suspension? :laughing

If you want a camper, you gotta get a truck or van unless you want to put yourself in a shitty situation. Only way I'd even think about doing something like a camper with a Baja is one of them pickup truck tent thingies. Either that, or just get a damn ultra-light tent trailer.

I had to look it up, that's actually a real product. :laughing

Website says it only weighs 115kg, so ~250 pounds. I suppose they may have it all loaded up with other crap, but it seems like a car should be able to carry that in the trunk/hatch area.

Best payload number I can find for the Baja is 1,070 pounds, which would mean two full size adults and some camping gear leaves you maybe 400 pounds of remaining capacity for a topper/etc. Doable with fiberglass, but not wood or metal framed.

Made BY dumbasses, FOR dumbasses. :D

The Baja may be a better starting point than a Saab, but just my semi-pro opinion is that you're way better off getting a bitchin' tent from REI for $300. If you MUST have an indoor shitter or whatever, srsly, there are ultra-light tent trailers out there. Much, much better option than trying to (dangerously) jam a camper on the back of a Baja.

The other problem with that much mass is how high up it is. Might be am even bigger problem than the basic overloading issue
