Just got back from buying a router. I got the netgear rp614. They didnt have the rt314 like someone suggested and the other 2 they had were like 220$ with like 6 ports which I didnt think I needed...I only got 1 comp at this house.

heh....if you only have one comp, a router is unecessary. now, if you use the router anyways, ....erm....personally, i'd use windowsXP's built in PPoE service. it's REALLY simple, plus you won't have to use any Yahoo! crap.

but if you insist on the router (for firewall protection or just because someone says you should or whatever), then you'll have to config the router via HTTP over your local intranet (hardwire between your computer and the router) ....oh yeah...a router does exactly like it's called... routes communications.....shit....i can't think right now, i'm rambling, sorry.

Can someone help me setup my router with my service? Do I just put my login info into it or what? the SBC guys didnt really want to help me

Im getting SBC yahoo dsl pretty soon here.

I have had AT&T, PAc Bell (SBC), and Astound. I will never do busniess with SBC again. I set the DSL up, and had it running for about a month with no problems. Then it stops working. I checked EVERYTHING on my end. Nothing wrong. After hours of repeating myself and explaining that restarting my machine will not fix the f-ing problem, I finally got a technician to come out. (About two weeks later, all the mean time- no service.) He said the Lottery machine at 7-11 up the road was interfering with my modem, but he had to get someone else ot fix it - he wasn't qualified. I kept calling them, and get this - they would open a ticket, ping the DSL, get no response, and then close the ticket because they got no response, stating that the modem must be turned off. No. That's why you ping somehting. If you ping it and get no repsonse- you got no connection. You do not assume that the modem is turned off, especially not the 5th or 6th time in a row (I mean scheduled date to attempt pinging, not the 5th or 6th ping itself...) All the while, I'm getting a bill, and I finally replaced them with Astound, who, like AT&T's service, worked fine. Then SBC/PACBell was going to charge me for the time it didn't work AND a $250 early termination fee. After literally 10 hours of phone time, I got most of my money back, but was still stuck w/ a $100 DSL modem, and about a months worth of service which I shouldn't have had to pay for. (The whole thing went on for about two months.) I believe there was a class action lawsuit regarding a bunch of similar instances, later on. Apparently, when you sing the one-year agreement, SBC feels that they do not have to provide you the service, but you are obligated to pay.

In any case DSL sucks. Get a cable modem if possible, way faster in my experience, although either could be faster (for D/L) depending on your personal situation.

If you will be using a router:

Do you have an older computer? A laptop? Try not to install the yahoo crap on your primary computer if at all possible. Use a junk computer to register and get your password.

Then configure the router and plug in to your other machines normally. Ditch the yahoo crap on the other computer ASAP

its best not to do this at ALL.. IF you are using a router, you can Call up SBC and they can help you setup a username and password over the phone. then all you gotta go is plug in the modem, plug in the router, follow the router instructions, and then setup your username and password in the router setup page and whalla, ready to go.

They won't set the username and password up for you... the lawyers want the customer (not a tech acting on csr's behalf) to click thru the license agreement.

but they WILL give you a registration-only username and password, plus a secure URL to register your acct. Plug that into the router and your web browser, and 'voila'... you're surfin'!

(assuming everything ELSE is working... sometimes things do go wrong right around the install date.... that's why there's a tech support crew standing by.)

:D

I guess I should be glad I have dhcp through Speakeasy. No extra installed crap on my system. And, they have OUTSTANDING customer service. I really couldn't believe how good it is.

Now...if only I can get better range with my WLAN.

Since when is a firewall overkill? :confused

Seriously, dude, if you have any windows system that doesn't come with a built in firewall, I HIGHLY suggest you get zone alarm or something. Man, you should see the traffic flowing through my network, well on the other had I'm also not behind the routers psudo firewall :teeth

Also, a lot of trojan horses keep poping up on my computer (or used to) when I'm in win2k. Zone Alarm helps! Get it :)

I have the dsl hooked up but like someone said sbc reps kinda made me click the user agreement. Im trying to figure out how to hookup the router since the SBC reps dont seem to want to help to much:x

I think Speakeasy is the best.
