So Apple, like a fatty boss, charges a lot from the people who actually provide the things that lure customers to Apple's platform . 30% off the profit.

Just like it had been doing with mp3s and DRM some time ago.. after which time it took the DRM off, after probably realizing it will lose consumers.

So any guesses on what do they have to lose and when this will change? :twofinger

Apple's new policy on subscription apps hits hard

Apple would do well to remember that nobody needs their products. I don't use any at all.

Rhapsody little fish trying to swim with big fish? Hahaha, goodbye.

I am rethinking my next possible purchase of an Ipad now. Anyone know of other good tablets out there?

Joe Average in some flyover-state could care less about this issue. That is why apple will continue to make mad skrilla.

*posted from a jailbroken iPhone. I do what I want [/Cartman]

Does anyone have any estimates on what percentage of iphone users jailbreak their phones? For this minority group of users Apple's choke hold decisions on apps/content pricing has little effect.

For the more common masses who don't jail break it seems the Apple biz model is well positioned to milk more revenue from Joe User, content providers and app developers.

I don't have the facts about a *good* tablet (of any company) but coincidentally I was reading up on the reviews of "HTC Flyer" tablet this evening, before these posts.
That's because HTC has been proven to be a good manuf., so I would believe them.
Disclosure, is that I already use Android 2.2 every day so I know it is good interface that does what I want. And speaking of which, today somebody posted a Flash Video on BARF that was forbidden by my work :) so I just saw it on my Android.. :)) couldn't do that on any iPad, you know.

Keep in mind my OP affects all Apple devices, not just tablets

I'm waiting for the Blackberry Playbook. They are dragging their ass on the release though.

BTW this "Blackberry" will not be a blackberry internally at all, if you don't know. They bought another company (QNX) some months/year back so the tablet will have newly acquired software... which I would consider better than old-skool BB;)

As for the original topic... apple does care everynow and then.. when their actual supporters complain. For example they reverted their anti-third-party-tool policy.. hahahaha after only a few months.

But the truth is--you buy from the elephant, *he* could care less about you

interesting. I dont see this as avery smart on apples part. their number one selling point right now, is they have., BY FAR, the best apps out there right now. the biggest selection.

dont rock the boat there. man jobs takes a leave and already shit sux lol

This is how they went from a super strong Market presence in the early 80's to nearly bankrupt after the Mac vs. IBM (PC) wars. Greedy attempts at control over the softs. I'll laugh my ass off if they make themselves obsolete that way AGAIN.

i was unable to find the article but a few months ago someone wrote about the parallels between when everyone thought Apple was gonna take over the world and MS was done but then MS got Windows to come stock on new PC's and they rode their monopolistic portion of market share to victory.

now, in the mobile sector, replace MS with Google and the author made quite a compelling case, citing corporate culture, social influence and acceptance as well as market cap and saturation.

all hail google.

or wp7.

or webOS.

or MeeGo...... nah, j/k. not MeeGo.:teeth

Sigh.. I agree with you unfortunately. Apple got Ruppo Myrhdog to ship their stuff stock... :( users are screwed, they won't have any other choice but to buy from one corporation.
:D :later

Just to make a point....

Apple did not want DRM. Jobs stated numerous times from the beginning that they wanted to remove DRM from the music but the record labels wouldn't allow them. When the record labels changed their stance, so did Apple. Just sayin'.

Now onto the Apps thing. I'm not sure that charging 30% of profits is a good thing, especially since the iPhone thrives off of Apps... but to play devils advocate, if it weren't for Apple, those developers wouldn't be making the 70% profit in the first place, so while 30% off the top may seem high, the majority is still going to the software developer while Apple spends the millions and millions on R&D for the platform the developer builds on -- and doesn't have to pay for, unless they make money. Doesn't seem all that bad.

PS: After looking at my grammar, that was the longest sentance in the history of the world. LOL

So you would support Microsoft blocking iTunes purchases through Windows-based PCs unless Bill Gates gets a cut? After all, Steve Jobs is profiting from all the hard work of Microsoft programmers.

Oh man that made me smile to read that. It's not 1995 any longer, now....THE SCRIPT IS FLIPPED. :laughing

You're one of those read what you want out of an entire post kinda people aren't you?

I was playing devils advocate and said I have no idea whether or not Apple's plan to charge 30% is a good business idea or not.

Personally? Since Apple tests and verifies that each App does what it's supposed to do, and doesn't do what it's not supposed to do, I feel that they should be compensated for it -- and based on how eager people are to make App's, that apparently wasn't too bad of a business model. I have no idea what they *were* paying though in comparison to the 30%.

In the end it may turn out that Apple has gotten too greedy and walla, they lose customer base -- or it may turn out that people are willing to give Apple 30% because they still make a fuckin' killing off of the iPhone App's in the first place. I dunno how it'll turn out.

This change is primarily a strike against Amazon and their Kindle app on the iPad/iPhone. Presently they way that works is that the Kindle app is free, and when people go to buy kindle books for their app, they get taken to a site hosted outside of the app, where books get purchased, and then the books get synced to whatever devices your kindle account gets logged into. Apple never sees a dime, and they want in on that action.

What will change is that content driven apps (like the Kindle app) will now need to provide the option of in-app purchases, and that those in-app purchases need to offer the lowest price for that content, and those in-app purchases will be subject to that 30% apple tax. I think apps can still allow purchases from outside the app, as long as they have an in-app option as well.

Its an interesting move. Amazon was really smart to have the Kindle app with day one availability on the iPad to compete with Apple's iBooks service. I think Apple is really dumb to try to run them out.
