Attemted theft

There was an attempted theft in SF today.

My street triple was parked on Battery at the intersection of Pacific, a busy street with a ton of foot traffic all around the intersection. I stopped putting the disc brake lock on a couple weeks ago as I got lazy seeing no one else in the neighborhood using one. Well, that will never happen again because the F***ers broke my steering lock and the ignition housing today.

Fortunately I was able to turn my key and drive home, but I'll need to spend some time tomorrow figuring out if the frame is damaged (due to steering lock breakage), filing a police report, and figuring out how to fix the damage.

Watch out for these guys!

WHY IS EVERYONE STEALING STREET TRIPLES NOW!?? WTF I say someone use theirs as a bait bike and we beat the living shit out of them when caught.

People leave their bikes parked without a disk lock? Huh. Weird. That's just asking for trouble.

with the amount of stolen bike threads here, if I had any bike with the name Triumph on it, it will surely have two locks on it wherever it goes (esp. in SF)

Nobody messes with Carlo Rossi's ride! lemme know if I can help man.

Perhaps leave notes on other bikes that park there, warning of theft attempt and recommending at minimum a disk lock.

Thieves are lazy. Given a bunch of bikes with equal value and desirability, the the easiest one to steal will be taken. Given this equation you can either alarm the hell out of the bike, carry a hardened chain and use multiple disc locks or ride a rat bike.

Someone should make a locking cap to cover your ignition.

Of course, as with any theft deterrent, a competent and determined thief WILL get your bike. But I like some things to push off the lazy fuckers.

sometimes they dont steal the whole bike. I've heard folks who chained their harleys front wheel to a post, only to come back with just a wheel and no bike. Theives apparantly just unbolted the front wheel and took the rest.

You know - this isn't a terrible idea.

If you made up a small note-card with the facts, something like:

Hello fellow motorcyclist,
on 7/29/14 someone tried to steal my Triumph Speed Triple parked nearby between the hours of 8 and 2.

The bike was damaged but the criminals were unsuccessful. If you noticed anyone fooling around with my green bike on Tuesday and you have any details that could be handy, please drop me a note at: email.com

Otherwise, PLEASE remember to secure your machine to deter the thieves that steal our bikes - and ride well, hope you are having a good summer.

I became a born again disc lock boy back in the late 90s when I lost my key at a nightclub and had to use a screw driver to break the key hole on my old FZR 600. It was painfully easy. A real eye opener.

Stealing a Street Triple should carry extra time in my book.

I don't see what the big deal is about using a disc lock.

Even if you have lo-jack and an electric cut-off switch, the disc lock tells idiot thieves to move on.

Is the Xena disc lock with alarm popular among BARFers? I have one but only have used in when my instinct tells me too. I usually use a normal disc lock with a reminder coil.

As much as it pains me (literally) I carry a 30ft long chain and lock with me if I'm not riding to work or a friends house.

I've had multiple people comment "It's not that serious" but they don't ride bikes so I don't expect them to know about our lifestyle, lol.

I have one (XX15) for the SuperDuke. I removed the alarm due to it triggering often (too sensitive?). The SuperDuke also has a Gorilla Alarm 9100 installed.

I don't get it either.
Visible, takes 10 seconds to install and the bike next to you usually doesn't have one.
If my bike is outside and out of my eyesight, it has one on. Period.
