So i got a fix it for having a left bar end mirror. He said it was not DOT approved

i thought it was OK to have at least one mirror as long as its on the left side.

If its legal i dont want to pay so what can i do.

I know its just 10 bucks but im a lil bit of a jew

:wtf I've never seen DOT markings on a mirror, aside from the "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" part which isn't on motorcycle mirrors

26709(a) actually, as that's mirrors and 26704 is about window glazing

To be fair, Johnny5.0 wrote 26704(a), not 26709(a). Maybe the Officer made a mistake...I'm not sure what you meant by "actually..." If it really is written as 26704 and isn't amended later, the OP can easily contest that in court and win because he's not in violation of that code section.

If the Officer corrects the citation and amends it to 26709(a) -

26709. (a) Every motor vehicle registered in a foreign jurisdiction and every motorcycle subject to registration in this state shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle.

Every motor vehicle subject to registration in this state, except a motorcycle, shall be equipped with not less than two such mirrors, including one affixed to the left-hand side.

(b) The following described types of motor vehicles, of a type subject to registration, shall be equipped with mirrors on both the left-and right-hand sides of the vehicle so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway through each mirror for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle:

(1) A motor vehicle so constructed or loaded as to obstruct the driver's view to the rear.

(2) A motor vehicle towing a vehicle and the towed vehicle or load thereon obstructs the driver's view to the rear.

(3) A bus or trolley coach.

(c) The provisions of subdivision (b) shall not apply to a passenger vehicle when the load obstructing the driver's view consists of passengers.

Maybe one of the LEO's can chime in here about whether mirrors need to be DOT certified or are covered under this VC section. If not, I'd go to court and fight it.

I'm assuming that Johnny misread the citation. It's easy to mistake a 4 for a 9, and handwriting on tickets is frequently... poor.

Even if it was 26709(a), that code section doesn't say jack about the mirrors having to be DOT approved. It doesn't matter what the Officer said, it only matters what the law says. I bet you could go to court and easily get that ticket dismissed.

if you get caught again by the same cop for an intentional equipment violation you can expect to get a point on your record for it. that's a good reason to fight it.

See 24004 VC.

Can you really tell if a mirror can allow the driver to see at least 200 feet back or not?

This cite seems like an easy dismissal in court.

It would be an easy test don't ya think?

It says "a view of the highway" but doesn't say anything about what you need to be able to see at that distance. I can see headlights at night at that distance in mine, but am not at all sure that I'd see a solid red light during the daytime. I can see the highway though...

Depends on the mirror. If someone is standing 200' behind the bike, and the mirror is a bit convex ("Objects in Mirror may be Closer than they Appear"), you might be straining to see a person standing at 200', depending on the mirror itself. 200' is what, 20 car-lengths?

200' is considerably less than 20 car lengths.

and I was just saying that I've got a mirror and have no clue whether or not it's legal
