I figure this is a great place to ask...
My desktop computer just gave up the ghost.
It was an Intel I7 something...but wasn't new enough to upgrade to Win 11.
Anyway...I replaced it with a cheap I5 octocore something...
I bought a "refurbished" system...computer, wireless keyboard and mouse and monitor for hella cheap...$250
It's working...BUT...
I'd like to build something better...
I already have a keyboard and mouse...NOT the ones that came with the refurb box...
Also...I have a new to me monitor that I'd like to use to its full potential.
It's a 34 inch curved LG widescreen with 160 Hz refresh, blah, blah blah.
My old monitor was fine...a 32 inch widescreen Samsung...but it fell off my desk and was damaged beyond repair...

I'm NOT a gamer...but I like to watch movies...so hence...the widescreen.
The new 'puter is an i5 with Windows 11 Home (should be PRO)...but it's a small form factor box that the generic little video card from my old computer won't even fit in...
So I'm thinking...I need to get the full sized box that I can put a nice video/graphics card into so I can use my monitor at least to its capabilities...right?
Here's the monitor I bought...

I watch movies in my family room on my 4k 65” Samsung. Much more pleasant than watching movies on my 30” computer monitor.

Would need the specs of your new PC, but more than likely it's perfectly fine for watching movies in 4k on that monitor.
 
I find it weird that the monitor would be fast enough for gaming but not for movies. I suppose fast esports are like first person shooters where everyone needs stupid good response times? I think 160hz is gonna be plenty good for video
 
Surely any modern integrated graphics can display a 4K30 movie?

A high refresh rate monitor offers little advantage for movies. Movies are generally 24 or 30fps. So 60hz will display them great.

There are some comments on Reddit claiming that Netflix won’t show 4K content on a 1440p monitor, leaving you stuck with 1080p. Even if that info is dated, I’d prob still want a 4K60 monitor for movies.

But ya. Transferring a computer into a new larger case is not hard. It’s adult legos. If you can work a screwdriver and be gentle, give it a try.

It may be good enough for the monitor...BUT...

Yeah...I seriously considered just buying a big TV...
But...I like the curved monitor family...
Also...I didn't want to have a 65 inch monitor on my desk...
My computer doubles as my TV...
 
Do you have a living or family room you could put a TV in? There’s nothing like relaxing on your sofa, watching shows on a big screen.

Ahh, that’s not a modern CPU or integrated graphics. It’s from 2018 and is 8 generations behind. It may still display 4K60 as long as you plug your monitor into the DisplayPort and not HDMI. But there’s a good chance your motherboard doesn’t have DisplayPort, only HDMI and DVI-D. DisplayPort looks like HDMI but is square on one side. DVI-D looks like an old VGA but is white and has one flat blade connector on one side. It’ll do 4K30 & 1440p30 through HDMI. There’s a small chance it’ll display 1440p60 through HDMI.


What graphics card do you already own? It could be worth it to spend $100 on a case and install it. Or $200 for a case and a used graphics card.

Id say get more ram, but that price of that right now is astronomical...

I run my 45" off the laptop usb C port and a dock... works fine.

You can probably get away with something like this:

Doubled my 8 to 16...

This monitor will be fine...Running it at 100 right now.

I have the card that was in the first HP...But it won't fit in the new one...SFF, small form factor...
But...The factory 630 on the new system will run at 100...It's looking pretty sweet...
It's "good enough"...WIN 11...
