BARF Irony - Emoticon Development

Meh. The whole point of sarcasm is either that it's baldly obvious to all, obviating a special font/emoticon (this brand already has one --> :rolleyes), or that it's obvious only to a few, and sails right over the heads of the victims, obviating a special font/emoticon. I'm glad you're trying to help the cause of civil discourse on BARF, but in this case, it's not really necessary.

I agree, sarcasm kinda loses it's effect if you have to tell someone it is sarcasm right from the start. But it is doubly funny when you have to tell someone it was sarcasm after they took it seriously.:laughing

OH, and ya we already got one.:twofinger

There also should be a 'Death of Humor' Emoticon. After a witticism gets taken the wrong way. Its really not worth it to explain, its just got killed. :laughing

why you guys so mean?
There are so many emoticons adding one more wouldn't end the world as we know it.
I think of the leg humpy picture and can say why place that emoticon after a deliberate attempt to hump on a poster? Isn't the motive clear already? I say no, it needs the visual! Visuals make a perfectly good point clear. I am a visual learner. Words have oh so many meanings but the pics create meaning to letters placed in a certain order.

and I like the fact that this proposed picture has 2 solid punches thus knocking the teeth out of the smiley.

crap, I need less coffee this morning. Off to the gym to punch on some innocents.

(Kim, join me?)

Great idea HH. HH's comment was actually brought-up in another recent thread here on BARF where even "the Budman" was fooled by a sarcastic remark from a bonafide veteran :teeth ...It's actually been on my mind for some time as well after I've found that my dry humor "getz mizunderstood" too. So, I decided to start this new "BARF sarcasm emoticon" idea development thread and then anyone on here can participate-in it.

It's final iconic form can be picked by Budman who'll decide if he wants to even keep-it so he's never fooled again??:teeth Anyhow, mainly, it would be nice to see it used on-here so the humor and playful banter can still exist because I hate to see countless threads spiral around where words without body language have the potential to send a thread into a momentary tailspin(even as entertaining as they may be for the moment). So, designers, hackers, expressionists, here we are "have-at-it".

con't....(with graphic files attached in next post)...stand-by...

Seems to be widespread misconception as to what sarcasm means. It's not "humor and playful banter." From Wikipedia:

The word comes from the Greek σαρκασμός (sarkasmos) which is taken from the word σαρκάζειν meaning "to tear flesh, gnash the teeth, speak bitterly".

In sarcasm, ridicule or mockery is used harshly, often crudely and contemptuously, for destructive purposes.

Bottom line: if you're not trying to hurt someone, it's not sarcasm.

If we had a "sarcastic" emoticon, I would use it right now. :twofinger

Truth is, what we do is mostly Flip. I think the definition of sarcasm has been generationally diluted. Like "like" and "epic" and "ironic" and "..." and "awesome" and ...

One of my favorite lines from Hurlyburly:

Eddie: Flip is sarcastic.
Mickey: No, it's not. That's crazy. Sarcastic is mean, it's heavy - it's funny, sure, but it's mean. I do both, but this was flip.

why you guys so mean?

Not too worried about-it Melissa... (and tnx for the props BTW). Look, the one thing I've learned from my experience is that "when people hate on you, it's because you've got something they want"...and the main point here was to begin a discussion, OK fine, it belongs in the sink, "whip-dee-doo"...big-deal, OK, that's single-click for a moderator to realign the discussion in the proper "bin". Well, I put-in far more effort into try and begin a valid discussion that would potentially benefit the community in the long run.

People on here can be mean because as the BARF tradition dictates, when "they think" an outsider enters what they deem to be "their turf" there will always be those people that will come and thread-jack just to shit all over-it(...and what little they know with who I hang out with on here).

So, maybe, (just maybe) they'll smarten-up and respect that there are members on here that actually strive-for-progress in bettering the communication skills on the forum and perhaps they'll get a hint from some veteran's that are kindly asking them to STFU if they don't have anything productive to contribute. I knew that asking people to add their own interpretation is subjective, so the range is wide-open...and for that reason, I personally won't baby-sit this thread.

Anyhow, it's their choice because as far-as the "haters and nay-sayers go" I will say one LAST thing about them. There will always be those who always seem angry and continuously look for conflict but I simply have no-problem ignoring those people because the battle they are really fighting isn't with me, it's with themselves.

OK, so how about we get this thread back on topic now and allow people with useful ideas and expressions make the most of it. Thanks, & so-long for now!

who are you?

Ahh, pondered this one for a bit as I'll take your question seriously to give some background on me as it relates to BARF (for those that care) because I guess you could say that I've hung-out a bit in the shadows but I've been out there a fair-bit. So at first, a casual observer of the BARF culture on here for a couple years back in 2007-ish. Then, started posting here and there...then was invited by some 'respectable cats' and went on a couple of group rides on here with some of you folks up at Alice's and then once up to Twim peaks.

I've been at some of the Leo Vince dyno nights and at the track occasionally but generally-speaking in the "larger-social group-ride gatherings" I shy away from those after seeing some of the stuff that went-on after a rip' through "the city" one time....and then only because the skills and the maturity of riders varied-too much across-the-board to suit my style of riding when the acts of a few in those large-rides can at times spoiled the fun for me.

So, for the most-part, I keep-it to a closer-knit bunch but I've ridden-plenty. There would surely be some on here that would recognize me up at The Wall and I've even hung-out at barbecue's of such already mentioned in this thread, anyhow I just usually prefer to keep a low-pro. Professionally-speaking, I'm a freelance corporate graphic & marketing communications expert. That's-all for now...enjoy the thread for what ever fruits it bares(or does not bare)...I gotz me some billz to pay, Cheers.:party

In keeping with my previous posting, true sarcasm would be against TOS. So here's my suggestion:

sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, and if wit were shit, you'd be constipated :x :twofinger
