Dammit, BBC is increasingly demanding $ for news. BBC has long been my go-to for believable news. I don't feel that I should have to pay for news that is truthful. Reuters and AP don't yet require a subscription; who else can I believe without doubt or needing to fact check (please don't say TruthSocial). I will puke. The following are not my body parts BTW.

I don't want to buy a subscription to the San Jose Merky News again!:bigbarf

If you like it, maybe just spent the fiddy buk and then you won't have to think about it for a year.

NBC news is pretty good and thus far open.

But yeah, not quite up to BBC for global view.

This is pretty new for them. I agree they are pretty good and probably worth it. I don’t have any news subscriptions at this point.

That make me an outlier??

NHK (Japanese Intl.) has an app for your TV or phone and a web site.
It's free to access and they have ~ quarter yearly Grand Sumo Highlights.
News of the day mostly on the hour for about 20 minutes.

The only thing I subscribe to is the local fishwrap.

I do still enjoy the actual reading of a newspaper.

But not on a plane!

I too mourn the loss of most print media. We rage quit the Fresno Bee over a year ago when they yoinked all the delivery routes from the drivers and gave delivery to USPO. It had already turned into a gossamer thin offering anyway. Fiddy? It was over $1000/year.

But yeah, I'll always support decent local newsprint, and once we're in the Bay full time I'd even pony up for the Chronicle, if it's still on paper by then.

Yeah, when I’m trying to watch something with bb…..oh, different BBC.

I used to describe my brief employment as an ink-stained wretch as working for a "local fish wrap" until I realized millennials have no idea of what I speak.

Share your affinity for reading a real news PAPER. Miss perusing the Sunday SF Chronicle/Examiner.

I used to have an order when reading the Chronicle.
Sports
Bay Area
News
Entertainment,

The term Fish Wrap will no doubt go the way of the Dodo Bird. Extinct.
So will another favorite newspaper term "Above (or below) the fold"
Nostalgia.
*sniff*

I have free antenna tv and catch PBS, DW(deutsche world), BBC and NHK (Nisei, Hong Kong, Korea) 9-11:00pm, cuz they have ‘less’ of a dog in our fight. That’s if I have a chance. Do have a NYT e-subscription and Nat Geo, but that’s it. Try to e-Drop in on as many free reads as possible, all over the spectrum, usually limited per day/month. I have a rare free hyper-local rag and that is invaluable for in-town stuff. Feel like I have to scrape the internet for any semblance of understandable reality. Do try to see and strive to understand all sides but alternative facts continue to elude me.

A VPN that connects to the UK solves this problem. Tried and tested. It also removes adds from many other sites.

I advise you also check Le Monde and Der Spiegel.

Check with your local library. A lot them offer access to news websites with paywalls.

What is this "library" you speak of? Thank you for the tip, that is a great one. Enjoying reading on Le Monde and Der Spiegel, thank you very much Eldritch. I use Reuters and AP as well.

I am somewhat of a Luddite; how would I set up a VPN?

There are a number of free services I've used in the past but they can be tricky to set up, slow, or unreliable.

I personally use a paid service, Proton VPN with the VPN Plus package. Simply install the software and it will pretty much do the rest for you. All you really need to do is tell it which country you'd like to connect to. For the BBC use the VPN to connect to the UK and the subscription is no longer required. An additional bonus is the advertising is limit or absent.

I've used Proton VPN for a couple of years, mostly on my cell phone to reduce advertising traffic that consumes data without your knowledge. What I particularly like is that you can use the service on multiple devices, phones and computers, without additional cost.

Thank you sir, I appreciate you taking the time to explain this. (y)
