BERKELEY, Calif. —

Berkeley police said Friday that they are investigating a hit-and-run incident caught on camera on Wednesday afternoon in which two bicyclists were struck by a black vehicle.

The collision occurred at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday on Tunnel Road, where the bicyclists were traveling east and were struck by a car traveling the same direction, according to police.

The investigation includes reviewing the video as well as following up on a number of investigative leads, according to Greenwood.

He said police aren't able to share or confirm specific information about their efforts because of the ongoing and active nature of the investigation.

Only in Berkeley would a hit and run involving a couple of bicyclists get so much attention.

(Preface)
Nothing slight about hit&run. Irregardless of who it involves.

But I do understand the motive of your post. Marin Co, or Davis, would shut the entire city down until capture of the violator. Then, public hanging would follow at sunset. However pedophile, multiple d.u.i. offender, 2 years probation. So much as look at bicyclists wrong, it's an automatic capitol offense.

Hit n run perp caught according to co co times newspaper this am also had H on him

Tell me about it! In San Mateo and Santa Cruz county they dedicate officers to sit at stop signs in the middle of nowhere to give $220 tickets to them!

:laughingObviously probably some people thought it was a big deal.

Have you ever ridden a bicycle? It's like riding an underpowered 250 on the freeway in your underwear. And every driver hates you.

I think the attention is good, it will hopefully give drivers a second thought when they try to mess around with cyclists.

The car was a couple of feet over the line for the bike lane. According to KTVU the driver tried to report that his vehicle was stolen shortly after the hit and run and was arrested.

So what street in Berkeley do you live on? :laughing

Yes, I've ridden a bicycle. I'm a certified bicycle patrol officer as well as bicycle owner. I do not ride my personal bicycles on busy streets because I think the risk/reward ratio isn't worth it. I also despise self righteous bicyclist who think they rule the road and don't obey traffic laws.

My point wasn't that the police efforts were lame, but that the media attention was lame. People get stabbed, shot, and killed on a daily basis in the Bay Area and a Berkeley bicyclist running a GoPro who was involved in a collision gets the media attention. Hit and run collisions happen ALL THE FUCKING TIME, but the Berkeley+bicycle+crime victim equation gets the media attention.

If I had a dime for every time a bicyclist yelled at, flipped off, or sat in the middle of the fucking road at 15mph, I'd be rich.

Toss the book at the dude driving this car in this video. But also make it a law -- You can't ride your bicycle on the road unless there is a bicycle lane. Additionally, require California Driver Licenses to ride a bicycle on said roadway. Require them to carry insurance. You violate a law, get a ticket, and your insurance gets fucked just like the car that had to cross over a double yellow to get around your 5mph up-hill in the middle of a 2 lane roadway bicyclist-self.

"Share the road." It's a two-way street. One that is, in my experience, violated far more often by the bicyclists than vehicles.

Probably not the correct thread for this rant because it has nothign to do with this particular collision, but still...

I like how a video showing a car swerving into two guys riding on the shoulder of the road turns into a cyclist bashing thread.

I like the idea that a grizzly adams looking guy can still legally get around towing all his possessions in his trailer on his beat up $20 Schwinn without needing a car and a license.. one of the last good things left in this country. :p So what if it takes 20 seconds more of your life to pass him.

Not many people shot/stabbed/killed are done so on video. Media isn't terribly exciting when people have to read about it, but when they can see a moving picture, it's that much more interesting. :2cents

1) No where did this turn into a cyclist bashing thread.
2) I like that he can legally get around too, it keeps me busy.
3) The issue isn't the 20 seconds, the issue is the double-standard that is set. I feel that if you are using a vehicle on a roadway, legally, you should have to be licensed and insured as you can, may, and many do, cause collisions.

I underlined a couple sentances to help you understand your contradiction.

Don't try saying that other crimes and news didn't get reported because of it.
And this was possibly a DUI ? :thumbup

If I had a dime for every time a bicyclist yelled at, flipped off, or sat in the middle of the bleeping road at 15mph, I'd be rich.

That sums my feelings up nicely.
Just what I don't want to read right before hopping on my bicycle to ride to work. :rolleyes

My own experience is that a large majority of bicyclists are responsible riders who try to properly share the road. It is a few jerks that get noticed when they blatantly disobey traffic laws and block traffic that seems to represent all riders to you two.

I would be happy to see the story about the driver of the black car going to jail in the news all over. It helps make more people aware that such behavior is not acceptable. How would you feel if the same guy squeezed out a lane splitting motorcycle and caused a crash?

So what if it takes 20 seconds more of your life to pass him.

So what if it takes 20 seconds more of their life for a bicyclist to come to a stop at a stop sign? They all whine about how much of an inconvenience it is to have to stop when required. :rolleyes

Poor dears.

Oh boy, more bitching about bicyclists on BARF......

oh-no...-not-this-shit-again.jpg

"Goddamm motorcyclists always cutting between lanes of traffic, and passing over the double yellow, and going too damn fast on my favorite scenic roads, and yelling at me when I'm talking on my cellphone, they all think they're so fucking special!!!! :mad "

Sound even a teensy weensy bit familiar? Being pissed off about dealing with bicyclists when you're riding a motorcycle is like being pissed off that the next turn on the road is a right instead of a left when you're so much better at left turns. :rolleyes It's a condition of road use - deal with it.

I hope the BPD locks the fucker up for a good long time.
