Best off-the-rack earplugs?

I use the white silicone ones...when they get dirty...you can easily see they turn grey...then I lick em before inserting...they work as good as new for a long time

I've tried a few silicone and wax plugs. They have the comfort part down. Sound attenuation may not be the best, but it was typically good enough. Until the seal breaks, then they amplify rather than attenuate the noise. I'm sure they're great for some purposes, but not for me for riding. YMMV of course.

I use sound guard earplugs. The ones with green tops and orange for the part that is inserted in your ear. They use them in the mach 3.5 wind tunnel at work so I figure they will hold up

I can't imagine those feeling very good in my ears. :laughing

I use mine for about a week before throwing them out. I've gotten almost two weeks out of a pair and they were still fine but I realized I'd been using the same pair for too long and threw them out anyways.

Well, they're not actual spark plugs. That sounds ridiculously painful. They did take a bit of getting used to compared to Laser Lites, but block more sound and my commutes rarely last longer than half an hour -- I haven't been on the bike for more than two hours at a time so I don't know how well I'd last on an all-day trip.

I am a fan of Howard Leights. I had been using the laser leites but a friend gave me some max lites and those are really nice on long trips because of how soft they are. My only concern is that the lasers are 32 dB rated but the max offers less at 30 dB.

What means best? Do you want quietest? Most comfortable? Easiest to insert?

You can probably find many you like via sampler packs:

I found a good no-roll plug and a few good roll-ups that way.

Moldex Purafit was my #1 plug for awhile

Very quiet, relatively easy to insert. They seem to be pretty popular.

These days my #1 plug is this EARSoft Superfit, a little less quiet than the above (though also NRR33), but a little more comfortable:

Best post award.

Canonical answer.

Hearos blue 33db ftw...

they recently changed the "recipe" for these. they may have the same rating, but they're not the same and don't block the same amount of noise. substantially less in my experience.

i recently switched to howard leight max. way better plug.

Surefire EP5, 26 NRR. Great construction and each pair is good for like a year really. Right now about $8-12 on Amazon... Reminded me to pickup a new pair. I hardly lose anything, except for earplugs. I swear I'm missing a pair I only used once lol. Double bonus is the Surefire is great for shooting too

I really like the Moldex spark plugs. Much quieter and stiffer than the Hearos I was using before, they also last longer and are cheap.

They come in big boxes of 200 individually sealed pairs for like $30.

edit: checked box, 33 dB NRR

So I got the multi-pack but I don't like most of them or they won't fit. I'm currently using the orange ones with a star on the end and like them but will try them all out.

I used to be my 3m Earsoft neons from a single site, but that site is gone as I just found out. So I priced them through Amazon and came up with these.

If you subscribe, you can get the price down to $17 and change, which brings them down to less than $.10 per unit. Each pair is wrapped in plastic. I use a pair for each trip, so two pairs per day. Spin them very small between your fingers, and insert, pulling down your ear lobe to open the ear canal. They hold their shape and slowly expand for a good fit. Great product, and an even better price.

Stop by some weekend in Sunset and I'll give you a handful to try. I currently have a stock of about 450 pairs.

+1

I buy one of these boxes once a year. I also sleep with ear plugs a lot of the time.

Yes we take a few sets on every vacation because of a few lessons learned.
One being a bar nearby to our hotel room that decided to have Karaoke until 2am with the doors open.

These are my favorites.

I buy a couple pairs at a time to have spares, keep in different bags, etc. I get painful ears from almost any earplugs after a while - these things are all-day comfortable and I'll swear by them. I've tried molded, foam (howard leight ones aren't bad, I keep a handful in my topcase bag in case anybody loses a pair or needs extra), the etymotic, skullcandy ear buds, etc, and these are hands down the best. Been wearing this kind for well over 8 years now.
