BevMo just Scanned my Drivers License

BTW bevmo does not scan every time, it depends a bit on the cashier, and how old you look. Stopped at bevmo and the older cashier looked at me, and then never asked for ID.

Then I got a flat.

THANKS OBAMA.

I don't know why but the " Thanks Obama" gets me everytime. :laughing

The bevmo cashiers leave me be.
Maybe it's because everytime they start scanning my purchases I start a rant about "why the heck don't you people carry candy and condoms here?, it's damn inconvenient to for your customers to have to make TWO stops for supplies used for one purpose!"

I shop at the BevMo in Pleasanton, and I've never had anyone even ask for my ID... :(

I was there last night. They gave me this exact same treatment of "needing to scan my license" as a matter of store policy. The clerk said she didn't like it either, but was required to do it on every transaction. She also said that a BevMo corporate person was standing in the store by checkout watching the clerks all day Saturday to make sure they did it to everyone. Might be bullshit, but she seemed more pissed off about it than me. Anyhow, I let the manager know that I'd shop elsewhere until they changed the policy.

They did it to me also in the Pleasanton BevMo. As I drove down the street I felt violated!! I wanted to call the cops and report the assault.

I wonder if you can obtain a Ca. ID card and give that when making purchases or would it be the same information available to them?

It's the same information save for the drivers license number not being present, obviously.

Me, too. And it always makes me think fondly of this little 'net community.

As for actual topic, it's never happened to me. I have spent a lot of money at BevMo. It will be interesting to push the envelope should they now ask. My BevMo card is ancient and so am I, so the youth thing is out of the equation.

But really, Radio Shack is historically much worse on invasive practices. I spent $6 cash there and they wanted phone number address, bla-bla. Unbelievable. And this was at least 15 years ago and longer. I still hate that place, one of the weirdest business models I have ever seen.

I never get carded at BevMo. (but, I only really buy root beer there.)

This country is really (and if you review who our founding fathers were) founded on capitalism. Making money for the MAN. And we can be the MAN.

So if you don't like BevMo or whatever, vote with you wallet, and dont go there. And apparantly, thru the interwbezworld you can share with that with everyone...

Capitalism. That is our world.

Hmmm...

I just checked with the two BevMos at which I usually shop and got the same answer.

Their scanner is an ABC scanner; it doesn't log anything, it just checks for eligibility to purchase alcohol, and that your ID is not expired. No logging, no recording.

About one out of five times, a BevMo staff member will ask me to pull out my license (and I am very obviously over 21), but it seems to usually happen if there is been a line of folks behind me.

Along the same lines, I usually 'net in my order; they don't always ask for ID and CC (they know me as a regular), but again, if there's a line, they do. And that's okay by me.

In the end, I'm far more concerned with identity/personal information theft related to using my credit and debit cards. And honestly, I don't sweat those very much at all.

(A small digression: Mrs. used to be a "policy shopper," and one of her routine assignments was to purchase alcohol and see if they carded her; she looked very much like a teenager. The clerks who didn't card her ended up out of jobs.)

Yeah, I don't tend to shop at hack shops. BevMo sounds like a hack shop. I just move along with my dough. However, ABC rules can get the innocent fired as pointed out by MysterYvil. So there is that.

I guess there is some advantage to looking older than dirt, so I don't have to deal with this stuff, anymore. :afm199

The Pleasanton BevMo manager said it's a Cardcom ViAge scanner, which definitely does have the ability to collect scanned data according to Cardcom's web page. BevMo claims they aren't logging anything, but really... would a local store manager really be in a position to know what the device does? It's not like she wrote the software. There's a reason they are scanning licenses instead of looking at them, and it aint to verify that I'm over 21.

Also, mag strips can be re-written. Anyone own card-writer? I'd like to re-write mine to say that my name is Jesus, and that I was born on December 25th, year 0. :laughing

use you passport for ID requested.
Get one of you don't have one.
Like, now. Before a DNA test is required.

Laugh while you can monkey boy.

Only had my license swiped once a couple years back for buying cigarettes. Never happened again even when buying liquor.

^^ What... you think retailers don't collect data about everything they can when you interact with them?

Everyone that was talking about government surveillance capabilities years ago was marginalized as a tin-foil hat conspiracy nutter until Snowden leaked all those documents. It doesn't take a lot of intellect to realize that 1 + 1 tends to add up to two most of the time.

I just think some people will find any reason to insist that the world is out to get them. I also find it funny that there's no evidence of anything illegal taking place due to the fact that someone's drivers license was scanned. An action that is 100% legal in the case of what BevMo is doing, BTW. I'm far more concerned with credit card fraud than I am of someone knowing my address, drivers license number and what I told the DMV my height and weight is.

I never said it was illegal. Maybe someone else did. :dunno

As for me... I don't worry about identity theft, but I find it to be an unwelcome and un-necessary reduction of my privacy. And before you say I shouldn't have an expectation of privacy in a store, I would counter that by saying that I do have a reasonable expectation that my whereabouts, movements, and cash purchases aren't being extensively monitored.

I'm not mad about it, nor am I worried about some sort of booze retailer conspiracy, but I have a choice in where or if I buy liquor, and I choose to do it somewhere else because I find this policy invasive, un-necessary, and probably ineffectual. :cool
