Big, Bad Treehouse

The gate from inside:

Sunday evening, thunder rolled in the distance, a few drops of rain began to fall in the forest and I sat with a bottle of water and relaxed for a bit as I thought over the steps for next weekend.

At this point, the structure is done, other than some sanding, trimming the hole around the tree trunk a bit and other minor things. The focus now shifts to making it easier for everyone to get up there. The family wants to "occupy the tree," but nobody is wildly enthusiastic about climbing that ladder.

There is an adjacent tree, 8' away from the tree house gate, on which I will install a small landing. The tree is uphill of the tree house, so a staircase to reach the landing will be a couple of feet shorter. I will install a staircase with a 90 degree turn at about six feet, so each section of stairs will be pretty user friendly.

To get across to the tree house? A hanging bridge. :teeth

Totally awesome!

Are ya gonna seal it? Otherwise redwood will start to crack and splinter in a couple of years.

Thanks!

I'll seal it with a clear finish, but haven't chosen the product yet. The wood is Douglas fir, BTW, which kept the cost down and is somewhat more in keeping with the wood found in the area.

If anyone has suggestions on a decent clear decking finish, I'm open to input.
