Anyone remember Carl the mentally disabled dude in the Sunset?

Damn, Carl used to show up at my High School (SI) all the time! This from 80-84.

He once came made an appearance at a pep rally and the whole school went wild. Nice guy. Got more love than most.

He even had a picture in one of my yearbooks.

spt509 chastisized me for not mentioning this:

remember the columbus day bazaar at north beach.. specifically at St. Peter and Paul church?

Well, I went to school there, and every year they would have a huge fundraiser with fair-like games at the schools gym.

one of the most 'famous' games involved betting money and dice. It was the pretty much illegal gambling, as you could win money and was always packed.

I always thought it was kinda fishy how they had a gambling game at a church fundraiser, and honestly it left my mind until Jimmy mentioned it to me a few months back.

I've lived in the sunset my whole life. Went to elementary at Jefferson, middle school at Hoover, high school at Lincoln, and college at SFSU.

I miss the pinball machines they used to have at Irving pizza (next to Handys deli on 19th/20th). Getaway was/is the best damn pinball game eVaR!!

Rocket Burgers on Ocean Ave. right by City College.

:teeth

That's still there Hooli, but it's called Beep's Burgers now. The cheese they use for the cheeseburgers taste like the government cheese the public schools used.:laughing :laughing

I miss the Japanese import arcade games the 7-11 @ 16th & Geary used to have. :cry The owner used to get completely different games every few weeks. :teeth

If ya have a mame cab handy I've got one of the later ROM sets. It takes up 3 or 4 DVD-Rs though, so I'd hafta bring it to a meet or something :p too bad my roommate moved our cab to his office.

Not to hijack the thread too much, but when you guys say North Beach, you mean the area just inland from Embarcadero near Chinatown right?

Cool thread.
I grew up in "The City" - Mission, Noe Valley, Diamond Heights - 5th generation San Franciscan - my great, great grandparents were poor Irish living in the Mission distrct turn of the last century. I lived around the corner from what is now Zeitgeist when I was in the 1st grade. I attending St. Joseph's , Cathedral Intermediate, James Denman, John O'Connell. I remember most of the places mentioned. Doggie Diner, Tic Toc, Playland as a young kid, Stonestown when outdoors, drag racing at the Great Highway. My hats off to you guys that survived growing up in Bayview and HP. Those neighborhoods were hardcore when I was growing up. Fond memories of mine include fishing off piers with my stepdad around China Basin, ice cream at Mitchell's, pizza from Little Joe's on Geneva, Geneva and Mission drive-ins, playing in GG and Dolores park as a kid, Fries with Malt vinegar from HS Salt fish and chips after swimming at hamilton pool, Keg parties on Mount Davidson, Glen Park, MaClaren park etc., Punk Rock shows at The Mabuhay Gardins, Sound of Music, etc. ah, the memories...

Best kept secret in the city..

Fall nights are absolutely breathtaking!

What's your best kept secret?

I'm a native and I don't remember much about growing up in SF. Mostly 'cuz Mom wouldn't let us out of the house! [J/K! Well, maybe not.]

Loved hiking through the Presidio with my siblings; bowling at the old Presidio bowling alley, then later at Japantown Bowl (got my first and only bowling ball there from Dean Asami -- he's over at Albany Bowl now), and finally at Park Bowl; riding for the first time my new 10-speed up Lincoln Blvd. and then over the GGB in my long-sleeved pink shirt and no helmet and then having to call Mom to pick me up on San Jose Ave. because my bike had a flat and I didn't know how to fix it or have any tools. Hated James Denman Jr. High and then Lowell H.S. -- some of the loneliest years of my life were spent there. Loved going to the Main Library and the de Young Museum. Then I discovered Daly City had a library up the street from us, and there I read all of Rommel's love letters to his wife (he wrote one every day and they were compiled by B.H. Liddell-Hart). Hated taking Muni. Hated the stupid kids who felt the need to bully because they were stupid and much bigger and aggressive and had nothing better to do. Loved discovering the violin's beauty (at James Denman) and then going to summer music school.

Secret -- I guess it's all those steep cement stairways tucked away in certain neighborhoods in SF. I remember running a bunch of them when I ran with the South Enders (out of the Dolphin Club) for a while. Even ran once with the renowned Walt Stack -- and by then it was obvious, when he led us and got us lost around Diamond Heights, that senility was over taking him.

MacAteer High School. We used to sneak into the bushes by the outdoor track, capture gopher snakes and let them loose in the cafeteria. :p

Anyone remember Captain Cosmic and you can call in and play some game where you scream 'POW' into the phone to shoot down spaceships?
