Not entirely certain this is the right section, but I'm hoping it is as I could really use the help!

I bought a jetski from another rider whom got it earlier this year but never registered it. I've already registered the jetski, no problems there but he didn't have the title for the trailer. I went through AAA, and they said it is not reported stolen but to register it I would need the owner to fill out a paper. Since the guy I purchased it from likely didn't register it (trying to find out from him) what would my options be here?

Appreciate the feedback!

You can try to locate the registered owner
Or
You can apply for a replacement title with a statement of facts
Or
You can just not bother with registering and take your chances
Or probably other options I don't know about

I would call the DMV, explain the situation, and ask the experts.

I suspect a statement of facts is the best option.

I bought and registered a trailer last year. It had no title. I went to DMV with former owner to sort. Was a non-issue.

Apparently California does not require a Title for a trailer.

in some cases the dmv refuses to even print out titles.
so take all your paperwork to the dmv, do there paperwork,
pay the taxes, and penaltys. be safe and legal.
better in the long run.

Ha, DMV and expert don't belong in the same sentence.

I believe in California trailers have titles (pink), but don't require annual registration.

I bought a Kendon trailer a few years ago. It came with a signed pink slip, but I haven't transferred the ownership to myself after all this time. I should do it to avoid complications when I sell it. Wonder what issue DMV may have with the delayed title transfer. :confused

They don't do titles/pink on many trailers as a default, but IIRC you have the option to get a title for an extra $25 or whatever.

this. when i registered my "built from a kit" harbor freight trailer a few years ago, there was an extra fee ($18, i think) to get a paper title. i figured better to have it than not.

FWIW i bought a bike trailer from a buddy 11 years ago. It was originally registered in Florida and had Florida plates. My buddy went back to Australia. I tried and failed to register in in CA several times and eventually gave up. I scrapped it 2 years ago. It never did get registered in CA and It was never an issue.

i got a pink slip for my trailer.registration is every 5 years from the date purchased or starting to be used on the road.i think it is 40$ every 5 years.

:wave
Oh hey it's me the previous owner of the trailer. Shoot me the form and I'll sign it for you. :thumbup
