Brain Cooling Helmet Technology

"ThermaHelm™ is a revolutionary brain cooling helmet technology that could save your life. Riding without ThermaHelm™ technology is like driving without an airbag.

Head injuries occur in 80% of all motorcyclist fatalities. A key factor in these injuries is brain swelling inside the helmet and the response time to address the issue. ThermaHelm™ technology helps to mitigate this problem by cooling the rider's head post-accident.

A standard helmet acts like an insulator. The polystyrene foam found in ALL motorcycle helmets is the same white foam that in installed in the walls of ALL refrigerators and portable coolers. It's the perfect energy absorber...and insulator. The helmet acts like an oven to an already hot, sweaty head causing post accident brain temperatures to potentially reach a fatal threshold. This is how motorcycle riders can die.

ThermaHelm™ technology works by triggering an endothermic chemical reaction inside the helmet lining at the moment of impact. The helmet immediately cools the motorcyclists head, keeping it cold even before the emergency services could have been called.

The technology is fitted to the very best existing motorcycle helmets that have passed stringent safety tests. By combining these quality helmets with this revolutionary brain cooling device, ThermaHelm™ can give a much needed lifeline to victims of motorcycle accidents."

Interesting concept. I wonder if they have any field testing or info to show the effectiveness.

I have always been intrigued by the jackets that have air bags built-in to reduce the chance of injury upon impact. Its always nice to see technology being applied to moto safety :)

great for those summer rides i would imagine.

It would be sweet if there was reusable liner that cools down you can activate, like one of those insta-ice-packs.

.

Except it's a one-time-use cooling pack like in a first aid kit. And it's not activated till you crack the shell. But yeah.. ;)

This is reeeeeeally stupid. No one ever died because their head cooked inside the helmet.

so how much is this thing going for?

No idea. It is still under develop. I don't think it will be cheap... before we get to that point, let finger out how to fit a bag of ice between your head and the helmet... or make use of this... :rofl

Unless they can back up the statement of " A key factor in these injuries is brain swelling inside the helmet and the response time to address the issue. ThermaHelm™ technology helps to mitigate this problem by cooling the rider's head post-accident.".

As they note, 80% of Motorcycle fatalities involve head injuries. What % of that 80% involved fatalities involving brain swelling?

And what % of those with brain swelling would have been better off with cooling of the skull? The temperature drop is going to have to be quick, and substantial for this to work. In other words, the portion of the helmet in contact with the riders head is going to have to get very cold, very quickly to be able have a viable effect on the inner temperature of the riders skull and brain housing group. I'd be concerned with it being so cold that it would cause tissue damage.

Yeah, I'll pass on the preemptive self diagnosis and self treatment of the potential injuries I may possibly experience someday.

well... I think they are using the medical ideology that cooling something reduces swelling i.e. you sprain your wrist/ankle you put ice on it to reduce the swelling.

so if your brain is swelling then the ideology of cooling it to reduce swelling is a novel concept

paging lovedoc as to your expertise if brain swelling reacts to ice similar to muscle tissue?

Problem with the claims the manufacturer is making is that they're completely unverifiable. Unlike regular helmets that can be tested with headforms, I can't imagine how they could test this cooling feature without actually sending people head first into a brick wall and seeing if the cooling helps at all.

And why they chose to compare brain cooling to airbags is completely beyond me.

It's always good to keep a cool head.:cool
I endorse this idea fully.

In fact, having ms, hot weather is not my friend at all, and can cause some rather difficult conditions. I'd like to see helmets with some type of cooling on the market. I'm a buyer for that!

Personally I would rather have leathers that freeze my entire body if I get in an accident. That way I can be thawed out in the the year 2100 when they have a cure for everything! :laughing:rofl

I don't seem to ever remember being advised to ice someones head when they have a concussion.....
