My friend followed me home today and observed that my tailight would flicker intermittently like when I hit a bump. When I say flicker I mean go completely out. What could cause this? I dont want people behind me to not know im braking.
check for any loose wires at the tail light. possibly a bad bulb with the filament going bad? most likely a loose connection at the bulb socket, causing a poor ground for the bulb. make sure the bulb is tight in the socket and all the wire connectors leading to the bulb are good.
There might be a connection loose. Check at the tail light first then follow the wires back to where they connect to. If that's not it, check the fuse for the brake light. If that's not it, check where your foot is when riding. Your foot might be resting on the brake pedal when you hit the bumps.
If you can't find the loose connection by looking at it, reproduce what causes it, so bump around on the bike until it happens, trace the wires back from the tail light, shake 'em, and the connectors, bulbs, fuse box etc. until it happens. Good luck!
My Ducati does that. The two power connections to the light bulb are copper strips with not enough force to make a clean contact when going over bumps. For my bike, the solution is to remove the bulb, bend the copper strips in some more, then replace the bulb.
This happens on my RS250 constantly, but loose wiring is not the culprit...the contacts on the bulb and housing gets glazed. Pull the bulb and clean the bulb and housing contacts. I have to scrap off the glaze on mine. That usually solves my problem for a little while. There's some special grease you can apply that prevents the glaze from building up. I have to ask a friend on mine, he puts it on his bike.
