He has been riding for 2 weeks now, just around 600 miles worth of riding. He had been begging me to take him to the canyons so i finally gave in and we went today at 6:00. I figured i took my first canyon ride with the tuesday riding group 500 miles into riding so he should be fine. I was taking it easy going about 30-35 on the turns (i told him to let me know if im going to fast). He seemed to be entering the turns correctly and maintaining a steady speed through em. I stopped and asked how it felt he told me it was fun, great, easy and that he wanted to go faster. I told him pinehurst is much harder than redwood and we will go slower. He makes it through some of the hardest turns just fine so i figured this should be a breeze for him. On one of the turns (which is like the easiest turn out of everyone) he skids and hits the embankment. Bike is messed up, he wasnt wearing gloves ( I told him to wear gloves or were not going but when we stopped he took them off when i wasnt looking) so his hands got messed up, he was about to leave the house without a jacket as well :facepalm, i had to remind him to bring it. I still cant figure out how he crashed on this turn going 25-30 Mph? Maybe you guys can help me out because he doesnt wanna tell me what he did wrong.
here are pics of the damage and the turn he crashed on, On of the pics shows his skid marks in the rocks.

He doesnt want to tell you what went wrong?

How's the overall maturity of said rider?

Along with what you said about the gear I'd be skeptical about whether they are the right match for a motorcycle.

Looks like he was going faster than he felt comfortable with and panicked, or wasn't paying attention and panicked, or saw the berm and fixated then panicked, and went straight off trying to brake in gravel and crashed. He's the only one who knows. Bummer.

He just keeps telling me he doesnt know what happend, i just dont understand how you crash on that turn going 30 unless u start on the inside of the turn, which is still hard to do at that speed and visibility of that turn. Hes 18, fairly immature.

Impossible to say how he crashed without more details. All I can say is that if he doesn't want to understand how he crashed, then he has no business riding a motorcycle. Please try to get him to tell you what he remembers, otherwise he's just playing russian roulette every time he rides.

I kinda figured that too but hes been riding for a good amount of time not panic like so, he was going through harder turns than that which makes panicking harder to comprehend

Pretty much what i told him after he hit the dirt (after seeing if he was ok of course). Just the simple fact that he never wants to wear safety gear when he rides pisses me off, i dont understand how anyone can ride without gloves, even if it is like 90 degrees outside. Not wearing a jacket or gloves when i ride just doesnt feel right.

That was my thought.

I ride in jeans fairly often and sometimes end up going for a short 10 minute ride in the local twisties in them but anytime I am going on a longer ride or a spirited ride the textile comes on (saving up for leather pants to match my jacket)... but I cannot even imagine riding without gloves in the twisties! Hopefully some good comes out of this in that you can convince him to wear his gear. Did he show any signs of having that sort of outcome?

Doubt it. He was excited that his hands werent as messed up as he thought they would of been. So i told him i told you to wear em but he was telling me its ok since they didnt get messed up :facepalm

Now is when you start $#$@ing with his bike, dont do things that make it a safety hazard to ride but rather things that make it unrideable or just nuisances. Eventually he will be over fixing it so much or not be able to afford it and I bet someday he'll thank you for that!

Its not just an assumption now, I think its pretty clear he lacks the maturity to safely ride a motorcycle.

I am only 17, even younger, and while I wont say I always adhere to the speed limit I do feel I am careful in planning where and when I do take some risks and also would never be caught dead riding without gloves (or boots and a jacket for that matter).

I feel like a squid riding in jeans and my leather/mesh jacket let alone without gloves.

Interesting you bring that up, so are you saying i shouldnt go riding around this summer with a tank top/icon vest on with flip flops and a mohawk helmet and shorts?:rofl

;)...

If I were one of the faster guys on the street I'd consider rocking a mohawk! I think if you have the skills to back it up, why not have a little flare to your gear?

I am sure its like a pull me over sign though for the cops!

Totally worth it though

ur "friend" is not only a danger to his selfish self, but to every other person on the road. If I saw him and it were convenient to, I would tell him to get the F off the road.

Hmm... Grab your bro with two hands by the shirt and say, LISTEN ASSHOLE, WEAR YOUR GEAR, OR YOU WILL END UP LIKE CHEESE ON A GRINDER. YOU'RE TAKING THE FUN OUT OF MY RIDE BECUASE I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR ASS. OR WE DON'T RIDE TOGETHER ANYMORE!!! And if it's a comfort issue, get use to it. I don't want to be uncomfortable for the rest of my life because you didn't wear your gear, and now your DEAD!!!

To your bro. Wear your gear man, your new, inexperienced. Don't be a fool.

:thumbup

I guess Tim is on vacation. Remember this is crash analyis, not the rider criticism and gear thread.

Moved to General since it quickly veered away from crash analysis.

What you consider a hard turn might not be what he considers a hard turn. Luckily he blew the turn into and dirt didnt become a hood ornament. Noobs dont belong on pinehurst , yet alone trying to ride it aggressively.
