Hey guys I know a few of you out there own the new crop of buells. I remember reading a thread on someone's new cityX... about 5 months ago??

I just read the long term update in cycle world and was wanting a real world update from you guys. Positive and negative.

Please don't bash on the buells if you don't/didn't have one... don't make this a thread railling on HD/Buell... I'd just really like to get some feedback from owners. Mostly the XB series. Remember know is half the battle.

So if you have one and have some spare time, I'd like to know what I missed out on not buying one (I was looking at an xb9r). Again positive and negative.

Oh also I'd really like to know if the butterfly exhaust valve is working (as claimed) to give you higher MPG (claimed 60mpg?!)

Yes someone please chime in. Gas efficiency is very important to me as I put ridicules miles on my bike as a commuter.

Go test ride 'em. Buell is said to be pretty liberal with test rides. The only one I have ridden, an older tube frame one, looked cool and handled and braked well, but needed more from the motor. While you are at it, may want to go down to the Triumph dealer and ride a Speed Triple as well. They too are said to be liberal with test rides.

+1 for go test ride one. I don't know about there, but the local dealer is giving away backpacks to people who come in for a test ride right now. They've been advertising it all over. They must be pretty liberal with test rides.

where is there a buell dealer in the south bay area?
san jose harley is no longer a dealer

I owned a tuber for 4 years the happiest day of my life was when it rode away without me. last Hd product I will ever buy!!!!!!!!!!

Testride or demo ride them BEFORE you consider purchasing. Ideally demo-ride at a location where you can ride other bikes as well. (Aprilia, at least, will have demos at Sears Point again this year)

Me, I testroad the xb9 and 12 in various seating configurations, and then a Tuono, at Sears Point AMA superbikes last year.

The Buells need a LOT more in the engine department, mostly refinement and an ability to revv (namely, a real 1L, combined engine/transmission water-cooled V-twin), especially when compared with a V-twin like the Aprilia/Rotax 1L in a back-to-back demo ride.

Pitty, because the chassis was wonderful.

I've test ridden an xb9r and xb12r... I'm looking for long term evaluations. And yes they are very liberal on test rides (plus they give you stuff!) I'm not looking for test ride length opinions. I've got those (and the loose fillings that go with them). I'm just trying to get an idea if people with them are still satisfied.

If anyone would asked me for my overall opinion of my SV I'd be able to give them a good and bad list that would be comprehensive and hopefully complete, if they asked me about it right after I took my first ride, all I could have told them is, that was so much better than my last motorcycle... couldn't tell them anything else, or anything that mattered (huge difference in quality of information).

I'm not in the market for a new bike yet, I'm just trying to cut through the hype. And get real info.

And I should be getting a call from my triumph dealer about a speed triple and ST for a test ride soon (I hope, I hope)

THe problem is, with such a bad impression on a test ride, why would an extra 1000-10000 miles make it any better? The transmission would still go CLUNK, your filling will still shake out at idle (every lamp on the thing needs to be replaced with an LED for longevity sake) and the engine would still be breathless and wheezy.

True, there may be OTHER things good & bad which show up after 1000 miles of living with it.

And if you want fuel economy for commuting, get a beater Ninja 250.

Good luck on that one. They may have a demo model, and that'll probably be the only one available. They're expected to be sold out nation wide by the end of the month. Most are sold before they even get to the dealership. I had to go through two dealerships and two deposits before I found a black one that was available. A few dealerships over sold early on, even though they knew that they were only getting two of each color.

check the Buell websites the xb series bikes are exibiting some of the same problems as the tubers did. when they break they break big big dollars bottom ends etc. the hd motor just isnt meant to be spun up and kept there the ft per second piston speed is too much for them. Hd dealers are dropping the product line even Mmodesto Buell best shop around the sac area dropped Buell and went ducati. being a former owner and knowing many former owners I wouldnt touch one. I will say I loved mine but the reliability is not there for the price you can do much better.
I owned a 99 m-2

I'm not looking for my impression....

jeez... I just wanted opinions of owners guys... I've read the good (ads), I've heard the bad, I've tried it (still can't say if I like it or not) I was looking for experience. Not uninformed opinions, or feelings. Sure I'd get those from owners... but if I could get an honest response, that would be cool. So far I've gotten "take a test ride" responses and no owners. *sigh*

the mpg question was an example that an owner would be able to backup/shoot down pretty quickly. Not what I was looking for exactly. Again Buell
claims 60mpg in their promotional materials... something I give the fuzzy eyeball to. It would be nice to see how that stat shakes out, in the real world.

But as in the real world, I guess I'm stuck with opinions without the benefit of experience.

Guess I'll go troll a buell website, sorry to help take up bandwidth.

I've a XB12R and a F4i. I've a pretty long comparo in SBR site. Very easy to search. Anyway, here is my long"er" term update - in comparison to the Buell, the F4i is almost boring to ride.

Initially you would find the Buell un-refined. But the longer you own the thing, the more you will like it. The chassis is wonderful. Robust is the word that comes to mind. The ideas / designs that puts into the chassis is amazing. You will NOT be able to tell the difference from the bike with a full tank of gas and an empty tank at all. BTW, the MPG is at mid to high 40's for commuting.

Maintanence on the bike is very easy (in comparison) as well. Mechanically, it is as reliable if not more reliable as any thing else that's out there. The bike does eat up tires quicker, though. About 20 to 25% quicker comparing to my other bike. This is due to its short wheel base.

How it rides.... Well once you get your bike dial in ( and let me emphasis, dialing it in takes much more time than other bikes) it is stable as a stone wall. The window is very narrow in terms of suspension setting for particular weight of the rider and you will have to get the bike right-on in terms of the settings. But when you have the suspension set up correctly, boy, mid corner, exist is just so stable is unreal. Mid turn correction is easier (in comparison) as well. Mind you, I've had the F4i's suspension reworked by Phil at Aftershock. Now keep in mind, when you test ride the bike, most likely the suspension would not be set to 100% to you ideally. You might even think it is a piece of crap due to that. When I first test rode the bike, boy, I was thinking, what a piece of garbage, it wouldn't want to turn at all! But l gave it another chance when someone from BARF pointed out that the suspension setting has everything to do with it.

You'd think the Buell with it very short wheel base is difficult as heck to ride in a straight line (i.e. on highway during commute); on the contrary, it is as stable as the F4i when hitting bumps/ cracks (like those on 101s by Mountain View/85 area!!) Also, as far as weight of the bike is concerned, well, I think it is like 30 or 40 lbs heavier than my Honda, but you DEFINITELY don't feel the extra weight in comparision.

Brake performance - with its's single sided brake rotor, you do feel that you have to use about 15% to 20% more effort (comparing to my F4i with steel lines) in terms of lever squeeze. But that's no big deal at all to me. The brake is as linear/predictable as anything out there.

Engine - if you want to ride this bike like an i-4, and are expecting that kind of engine behavior, well, you should not be looking into the XB. It behavior very differently and it is very additive. The torque is definitely there but if you are comparing this XB-9 (~985cc(?)) to any other liter bike in terms of acceleration, well, any later model liter bike will eat the XB-9 for breakfast.

On to style - it is definitely one unique bike for sure. None of this boy-ricer style in its design. The attention you get from people are sometimes funny. There are couple of times where when I was slowly pulling into my self-proclaim parking spot at work (under a roof of a building where not officially a parking space), some people just followed my bike and try to figured out what the heck type of bike it is. Numerous times when I'm fueling up, I would turn around to hang the nozzle back and catch people just standing 3 ft from the bike staring at it. Their car / truck would be somewhere in the next aisle 20 ft away.

Now onto the negatives; just like everything in the world, there are negatives to this bike - first and for most, the lighting on the XB-R's. The lights (the projectors) aren't above average in terms of performance to begin with. I've even been reading on the Buell XB board that the reflective paint will degrade over time. Those people in Europe doesn't know how to make good headlights I guess. Yes, the headlights are from Europe (Brake & suspension from Japan, Chassis from Germany(?), couple of other things from Europe / Japan and engine from USA... BTW, some might say that the engine is just the Sportster's engine - that's is not true and I don't have time to go into that). In the XB-S, the lights, I believe is either-or. This means one side is low beam, and one side is hi. You can't have both lights on at the same time. You do, for both S & R, have a passing light trigger (like the one on Suzuki's SV's).

I will supply more later since I can't remeber anymore at this point.

Hey man, go to www.badweatherbikers.com

Per my experience, on BARF you will get a lot of bias opinions from those who have not even sat on a Buell for longer than 15 min. Also, the pre-XB Buell's are loads of crap and should not be compared to the XB directly. I'm really wondering what Jake is talking about when he claims the problems from older tubers are exhibiting in the XB's as well.

I had an 02 M2 and enjoyed it. It's fairly heavy feeling when you are stopped and does vibrate a lot while idling. It doesn't feel as smooth on the highway at high speeds nor does it inspire as much confidence as a Jap sportbike does (the only other bikes I've owned as a point of reference). It was fun to ride for what it was but I can't say I would buy another one (although I have been interested to check out the Firebolt). I really can't remember what the gas mileage was like on it, sorry I can't be of more assistance with that. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Here's a pic of mine:

Kinda seems like you're just looking for the answer you want.
WHAT?!
Where do you get that?
What answer do you think I'm looking for, that they're crap, that they're brilliant??

AGAIN, I'm trying just to get owners opinions good or bad... how is that farming for an answer I want?

I'm not looking to buy. I was at one time, but not now. I've read a lot about them (ads)... heard the smackdown on harly's and buells by people who don't own them.... I just want experienced opinions, man.

Thank you GO. and hkwan, this kind of first hand knowledge is what I was looking for. Nothing major, just your feelings.

I had a 03 XB9r for about a year before I sold it.. Nice bike overall..
A couple things:

I always felt too big for the bike (6'1" 190 lbs).
The motor was weak. The x12r would be a must if I was to do it again.
Vibration is major at stop lights.. Even before I added the aftermarket can.
You couldn't look in your mirrors and see anything the vibration was so bad.. My Fat Boy with a 95 inch kit and straight pipes didn't vibrate this much!
Handling was excellent after some tweaking of the suspension.
Needed another gear and more snappy engine response for my taste. Especially for the money.

Brakes were decent.. Mirrors are useless from the factory on the 03 model. I think they improved this in 04. I had to by aftermarket spacers to space out the mirrors another 3" from the fairing. It helded quite a bit.

Sold it to get a inline 4 sportbike, and because I had a buyer that was willing to pay top dollar for it (he didn't want to be bothered doing all the mods that I did, so he bought mine instead of new).. FYI- all I did was pipe, seat, blinkers, mirror spacers and suspension adjustments.

Anyhow, hope that helps.
