Building a bobber

glf, yeah it was great meeting you too. That bike is a cool example of DIY, I would like a little more polish, but the spirit is totally there!

yeah man, I think the dude was keeping with the engine, and metal/rust look and kept the paint simple.

but hell, a quick frame powder coating, lots of clear coat on the metal bits...and bam....maybe work a softail shock in there, some whitewalls....although i would prefer the tires with the white letters, rather than an entire white wall. but when i build mine, it will be unique. :teeth

13K for what? The bike pictured is from Exile bikes, built by Russel Mitchell. It's selling for ~50G's.

Or are you just talking about chassis?

They had about four different models on the floor at Arlen Ness, of the bike I'm talking about. Not saying it's the same exact bike, but it looks just like the bike you posted, an old school-style bike with white walls for way less then $20k.

My garage space is expanding this summer and I have been thinking about the same thing..... but I cant see spending big $$

Really like the exile bikes.... but will probably just build some sort of rat/naked bike for city work. If I could build something HD and cool for under $5K, I'd get to work this weekend.

So, I kind of think since I'm starting to get old I should begin the "what-if" planning phase of building a bobber.

I really love the old school style of flat black, minimalist looking, with whitewalls and custom tooled brown leather seat.

I know there are plenty of rolling chassis kits, frames, etc. available, but I would like to hear from someone who's actually built one. So... Have any of you fine barfers built a bobber / chopper / custom before?

If so, what should I expect during the build process in way of unaccounted for expenses, fabrication, etc.?

Here is a PERFECT example of what I'm looking for. :love :drool

Here is the BMC Bobber, that another Barfer bought at Arlen Ness

Maybe I have a different definition for what the OP is talking about. Is the OP looking to build up a fun project bike (even if your goal is nicer then the one below) or an expensive and flashy chopper? A kit custom is an oxymoron in my vocabulary.

another one...ammo box rocks, and the oly catch can....:laughing

he used piston rods as bar risers.

I think it would be cheaper to buy one at $20,000 don't you think? :laughing

Exhaust looks a little restricted to me... Maybe they need a 4>2>1>2.....

And now that I look at it isn't that an 90-94 RGV swingarm"Para-Lever" duty? on the front...

I could be wrong, but that looks like a V8 shoved in there. :laughing

Also, i love the car wheel on the back. Genious.

JockeyJournal com if you want to build one

GarageCompany.com if you want to buy one.

both are amazing sites, but for D.I.Y on a budget
I'd suggest taking a metric cruiser and bobbing it
down- just like the original bobbers.

i understand there are plenty of hot-up parts for
the big yamahas.

somewhere i recall seeing a Gold Wing that had been bobbed, lost hundreds of pounds, was called a BullDog.

Something I'd like to put together some day.....just need a Monster motor and some time.

Flight Cycles does some sweet work, best custom Monster I've seen to date. I'm sure he'd be willing to chat as far as ideas go.

I like the bobber idea but ive ridden rigid frames and they look a lot better than they ride. It would make a cool second or third bike.

A softail with the rigid look would probably be pretty cool. but your traditional bobber is rigid with a spool front hub I.E. no front brake. I think a softtail bobber with decent front brakes would be a sweet bike. very clean and minimalistic.
