Recent events have left me unsettled and I feel the need to expand my arsenal. Any recommendations on places to buy a gun in the South Bay? Am familiar with Reed's....

Thanks!

Gun shows are good places to get a variety and really good deals.

....plus, you'll be in Napa, stop by V. Sattui for a free tasting

Correct me if I am wrong but is it not impossible to take possession at a gun show? Do you not have to take possession at a FFL place, typically a gun shop for the final transfer? I think that Reeds wants $120 for that which would seemingly destroy most savings one might incur....

Wine tasting usually leads to a slippery slope for me....especially if BV is involved.

I'm not sure these days, it's been years since I've gone to one....hey, if Michael Moore was able to do it in "Bowling..." I don't see why we can't.

mmmmm, BV...perhaps hit the veeneries after the show.

They usually have a dealer that will do the transfer for you at a show for a nominal charge. At least they did last time I bought a gun at a show.

Because he wasn't in California. You have to go through the waiting periods here unless you pick up an, "Antique," which I highly suggest. I personally have a vz24 action 8mm Mauser (7.92x57js) and it is a ton of fun. Solid, sturdy, long gun that'll crack the block on a '57 Chevy from a long way away. No waiting period and it cost me about $150 by the time I was done. More importantly I got to take a nice classic piece of weaponry and save it from rust and disuse on a shelf somewhere. A great Rifle that's easy to acquire and a piece of firearms history that every serious collector should have in his repertoire. I'm not sure about dealers in the south bay, but Big 5 usually carries a number of these antique firearms, and most Firearm Stores I've been to have a selection as well. Do make sure you inspect hem before you buy. Some have the barrel shot out or misc. abuse from poor storage techniques, but some real gems are out there in the rough!

ditto on that. I saw a guy using the stock crappy site on one of those mausers. he had just picked it up and was getting some seriously tight grouping right off the bat. the thing was 100 years old but the craftsmanship was unreal and the bolt was still silky smooth. with a scope and decent ammo, that thing could make a pretty nice toy.

Remember BB, start off with small-hand guns. You don't want to look like a squid and start shooting upside down or gangsta style without learning how to correctly.

o btw- is there a specific person you want to use it on? A certain monkey perhaps.

Were you thinking long gun or pistol?

Oh man, you should've been at Reed's for their annual gun sale. They had reps from the major companies with tables set up and guns everywhere. I would say Reed's is a good idea...and if not there, try Sportsman's Supply on Camden Ave by Highway 17. Trader Sports in San Leandro is a bit far away, but they got some nice choices, albeit their customer service is lacking at times.

:rolleyes

I bet ya didn't notice he said "expand my arsenal" ... no need to start off small, the implication is he already has some ;)

jackson arms in south city. marv ak "mister" on the board works there :thumbup

I have a Ruger 22/45 which I have had for many years which is both accurate and easy to shoot. I enjoy shooting such a .22 because I can afford to shoot a couple times a week and each time I shoot I can bang of a few hundred rounds. I am currently struggling with the question of what to do for a second firearm - thoughts being a Hammerli Trailside (another sweet shooting, very accurate .22 auto, just more accurate and more expensive than the Ruger) or to get a nice little .357 wheelgun or perhaps a 9mm. Sometimes I think that what I really want is a Les Baer .45 but then we are starting to get to a point where both gun and ammo become somewhat spendy. Then again perhaps a 10/22 or even an SKS would be more interesting....

Well, given the Hammerli (AKA Sig) isn't legal in CA you might have a hard time finding one... :twofinger However, if you're looking for a fun, accurate .22, take a look at the Beretta 87 target. Mags are a bit difficult to find, but other than that it's GREAT. I'm a decent shot (not a great one, but shoot 2-3 times a week) and can hold it to a 1.5" group at 15yds. Here's a link on the Beretta site http://www.berettausa.com/product/product_pistols_main.htm near the bottom.

If you want something cheaper it's hard to beat either the Ruger MkII or the Beretta U22 Neos <http://products.berettausa.com/frame_tabellaprodotti_2002.asp?sgmt=32&Model=U22 Neos#>

If you want something in a big larger caliber, take a look at the Glock 22. It's a full-size .40. http://www.glock.com/40.htm TargetMasters in Milpitas usually has these for sale and rent. I have a G35 and it's my favorite gun to shoot!

Legal or not they have the Hammerli Trailside in regular, long and target flavors down at Reed's in SJ. I would find it surprising that a target .22 would be classified as an assault weapon but then this is Kalifornistan...

Both Beretta choices seem like solid, fun guns. However, I doubt that either would be substatially more accurate than the Ruger 22/45 which I already have (same as Mk II/III except for different grip/magazine).

Oh, decisions decisions.....so many toys, so little money!

As for Glocks...in the past I never really enjoyed shooting them, although I did enjoy big wheel guns and tricked out .45s. Think it is time to go rent some guns down at the range.

Thanks!

I love my antiques sometimes more than the new stuff.

But the law off taking the gun the same day Historical Relic was tossed out about 3 years ago.

I miss the days 10 years ago when $106 got you a great SKS and you got to leave with it that day. And could still get assalt rifles, would have got more if know the prices some are getting now.

Plenty of places have the Hammerli. However you need to be a LEO or have a special license to obtain one. They aren't classified as assault weapons, but they have never been submitted for the CA "drop test" to be certified as a "civilian safe" gun. Therefore, no badge, no hammerli.

FWIW, Reeds also operates a gun range in Santa Clara. Personally, I think it's nicer than targetmasters and they also have some handguns for rent. If you enjoy big wheel guns, at least rent the S&W .50 revolver. It's definitely a hand-cannon. Maybe purchasing a .357 wheelgun would be your best bet. You can shoot cheap .38 special for "normal" use then shoot .357mag when you want to crank it up a notch.

doesn't seem like anyone answered the question about an FFL transfer...

i just recently bought a Taurus PT92 online for $350, and had a local pawn shop do the FFL transfer for $60...so you really can save a lot buying at a gun show...

good luck!
