California has banned generators.

did you read the article that is a shitty screenshot in the OP?

The sensationalist title that says OMFG BANNING GENERATORS then goes on to say that they just have be more efficient and pollute less.

Big fucking deal.

Sure did a good job winding people up, which is clearly the intent of the "article" - people can just react to headlines and not bother reading anything else, apparently..

not only that, but ‘portable’. it’s inconceivable to me that a portable generator would be a significant asset in a PG&E outage. we recently purchased a generator for our mountain house. reviewed all the options - and even the low level full installations didn’t provide enough power for all of the basics. the cost differential wasn’t that great so we went with a whole house unit - runs on propane (easy for us as it’s a utility that’s plumbed to the house - so no tank). if i was going to do anything more limited, i’d go solar. have a friend in north carolina who bought a solar powered generator - not sure the size, but says it will run all of her electricity for 3 days (she lives in a big old victorian house - and in hers words ‘consumes a lot’). don’t have direct experience with those for home use, but do have a small portable one for our sprinter (for traveling). the thing works great!

bottom line, IMO we have gotten lazy with our gas powered bullshit. there are better options - explore them. the sky is not falling :laughing

You clearly are not familiar with the actual change. Go read the old thread if that helps. Reduced emissions is through 2024. Zero emissions is the requirement by 2028.

Have you been through any of the longer PSPS? 4-5 days?

Just having enough Generator time to charge your fridge back down to cool and charge up your battery powered devices is huge, it doesn't need to run the whole house.

I guess if people are in rental housing where they cannot install solar or large built in systems, let them eat cake?

so you really think that most people, let alone most renters have gas powered generators? my point was that there are other options, you know - new fangled technology.

Jesus fucking Christ people.

"Small emergency generators, as used by families and small businesses, were exempted, provided they are permanently mounted or “fixed” units."
But for you and me, the new rules will take a while to have much of an effect. Even when 2028 rolls around, a “generator ban” there won’t really be. For folks visiting California, your generator, no matter how old, is still lawful.

Read more, talk less.

Are you saying that people should use electric powered Electricity Generators when the power is out for 5 Days in an entire City?

the cost differential wasn’t that great so we went with a whole house unit - runs on propane (easy for us as it’s a utility that’s plumbed to the house - so no tank).

That's what we did.

We looked at a Whole House natural gas solution, but after rebates and what not, 2 batteries were basically the same price, so we went with that to augment our solar system. (PVE, not planets...)

A solar generator with battery banks will work way better than a portable gas generator and use no fuel (other than the sun), but by all means cling to outdated technology.

And before the "what about nighttime?" crowd chimes in, size your battery bank appropriately and night isn't an issue.

Hey, I'm just pissed off my horse can't shit in the street.

But what about the people that can't afford batteries and solar? Are they SOL?

we will be having this debate soon about motorcycles.
I dont think you can come close to power storage from a battery and be in the same price range of a generator

our neighbor did the same thing. he already has solar, and compared the cost of a whole house generator to additional batteries - and went with the batteries. he’s up at the top of a hill though, and has good sun exposure, we’re lower down and surrounded by a lot of tall trees, so solar isn’t really a viable option for us. wish it was - would have went that way for sure.

They didn't until the public infrastructure started failing and then all of a sudden, yes, the generators all get completely sold out every year during fire season.

Renters have Zero Ability to permanently fix a generator to their home. :dunno

Using a Solar PV system with a full Battery Back Up like those supported by the State's SGIP program is the gold standard, but anyone presenting that as the long term solution is speaking from a position of privilege with a complete disregard for low income people and those unable to purchase a home in the CA Markets.

How are they affording generators now? :dunno

Dude, a decent Gas generator is like $800. A good solar PV system with battery back up for the home is like $30k.

Maybe Freddo can elaborate, he seems to know...

How are you going to charge your car, chainsaw, etc?

You on a well will be screwed, better get a large water tank up on top of a hill, if you have a hill. How will you keep adequate pressure to your fire suppression system in your house, that is now required with new construction? Poor Basterds in the foothills will see their insurance spike again, if you can even get it...

I don't remember voting for all this nonsense, was there something in the last election that I missed?

I'm thinking about building a gasifier to run the generator.
or a waterwheel generator using the well water

You're comparing a portable generator to a fixed solar system.

The solar system doesn't have to be a fixed system:

Eh. I bought a Jackery system for nearly $700 and the damn thing won't even power a small portable fridge/freezer for more than 10 hours. Charging the solar generator is an all day affair requiring constant babysitting of the solar panels. Meanwhile my little Honda generator (that I paid $200 for, used) will run a house fridge (and then some) for a couple of days on a little 2-gallon Rotopax.

Guess which one I'm relying on to power the house fridge on a PSPS? The Jackery is pretty handy for powering mobile devices though.

In the state of neo-feudalism, we have to provide our own water supply (tanks and rainfall), our own power generation and/or storage, pay a tribute to the governing authority who comes urneasonably down hard on our activities. Deal with an array of currency and/or barter, trade whatever. And of course, to some, arm ourselves for the hordes of desperate serfs and might wish to get our belongings. I wonder what zoning has to say about personal moats.....
