Can anyone help me find history of Triumph 500 Racer San Francisco area

+1000

This thread is so fucking full of win.

Thanks for keeping us updated, and for the pics! Tell us more...was the previous owner stoked to hear about the bike? Any fond memories of it?

Yes the previous owner was happy to hear from me..he does have fond memories of it. Watch this space I may have some news on that shortly.

Congrats! Looking forward to reading the back stories of the bike! :thumbup

The only back story I have at the moment is the bike was purchased in San Francisco area in 1989. It was shortly after exported to Australia. A friend of mine and I went halves in the purchase. Our plans back then were to race it in classic races but as often happens life got in the way: children, houses purchased, paying housing loans..........
We have managed to hang on to the bike for all this time but it has spent its time in either his shed or mine with occasional talk of getting it running. Seems like now was the right time to do it. We were hoping to take it to a road track earlier in the year but that didn't work out-I doubt we would have been let on the track as they would have had a look at the tank in its present state and the straight through pipes and sent us packing.

Dirt drags were coming up, they sounded like they might be fun so we decided to give it a go. Not sure where to next with it. We will keep our eyes open for suitable events. In the meantime tank repairs, tuning/timing testing.
There may be some news on its earlier history coming up soon.

Is the head stock or are there 2-plugs per cylinder?

No... no two plugs.
We have not even had the head off it! Apparently it has high comp pistons, surely a bit of work on the head as it running a couple of large carbs for a 500. Possibly daytona cams and a few other goodies.

a couple of the guys form CA Melee & CA Giro lists luv dem 500 Turnips

one's Jim Hoogerhyde [also of SFMC ?]

the other's Ivan Thelin

either/both of em know a lot!

Tank does not hold much gas and it appears my leak repair was not 100% . Probably end up using it for a mould for a new tank.

Dont know how I would go in the outback with a leaky fibreglass tank, straight out pipes, no registration, and a motor that wants to be run flat out all the time......would be fun though.

Hi OZTbird,

I'm sure I've got a lot of crazy-wrong ideas about what goes on in Australia from Hollywood ... good for you for racing that Triumph! :thumbup

Hi firstbuell,
Good idea, I'll ask Jim and Ivan if they know anything about OZTbird's race bike ... I'll ask Harley Welch and John Regan (both SFMC members), also, ... They both ride 500cc Triumphs, too ... :ride
