can you split between double yellow?

Let me see if i can explain this, cause the title sounds pretty morbid. Some of you may know this stop sign. Comming from niles on niles canyon in sunol.. there is a stop sign. By 3pm the line is prolly a good 2 dozen cars that are stopped waiting. Two lane road separated by a double yellow. Can you split between the yellow (without being on or over it) along side the long line of cars to the stop sign? This is assuming you can see there are no cars comming from the other direction. Which you do have a pretty good view of. So basically your splitting between cars on the right, and staying on the right side of the yellow as long as no cars are comming the other direction.
 
I don't think you're breaking any particular law doing that, but keep in mind that even a mirror over the double yellow is "over the double yellow," legally. Also, can you guarantee that you won't have to readjust your position because someone has a big SUV or pulls a cockmeister maneuver on you? Also, you're putting yourself at risk of getting mirror-smacked by someone coming the other way, hugging the line.

Guess what I'm saying is you may be legal, but it's kind of risky.
 
If you have to do it, do it on the shoulder side. The ticket for driving on the shoulder is not that expensive compared to crossing the DY.
 
I would like to hear this from an officer. I have a similar situation at summit/17 every day. Can't say it's a good, or safe, idea to do...but I have thought about it on certain situations where there is plenty of room. I'm guessing it's a nice little ticket....
 
got pulled today for splitting down a turn lane (utilizing turn lane for >200 ft). Officer let me go (thank you sir) but said stick to the right on a 2 lane road.
 
so, the jackass on the old goldwing that was 'splitting' on the summit overpass (ok, he was just riding the wrong way in the westbound lane) to get to the intersection, only to be nearly taken out by a car minding it's own business turning left was breaking the rules? hard to believe as he did it so safely.

or the f-tard on the harley at 4:30 that couldn't be bothered to go around me and the car in the middle lane, both going 75 in our cars, so he decided to split us instead and zig zag around a bunch of other cars...well...actually, his body zig zagged, his POS barely moved. I swear I'm really starting to hate so many other riders.
 
You cannot split anywhere; you can however share lane between two lanes moving in the same direction.

That is the dumb down basic's of this law, so the answer is no.
 
california is the only state that allows lane splitting....its very subjective if the officer chooses to write a ticket, and no you cannot go over double yellow
 
I think Texas can now aswell, so Ca is not the only state. Hopefully more to follow.

Can you post something that will confirm lane-sharing in Texas? The last I heard the bill died so nothing happened.
 
If your familar with Hwy 92 from Half Moon Bay. The two lane section is allways getting grid locked. With a delay of near an hour to go eight miles. You have about two feet between the cars and DY. With no other cars coming other direction doing ultra slow speed pass over the DY on cars too close to the DY.
It's all legal until you roll up behind a CHP cruiser stuck in traffic :teeth CHP is riding the DY you can't lane share without going over the DY. :x
 
You shouldn't even be going to the stop sign in Sunol. You should be getting off at the off ramp into Beautiful Downtown Sunol, then take Foothill for about a mile of interesting twisties. You can then get back on the freeway at Castlewood if you like freeway riding. Personally, I would stay on Foothill until it turns into San Ramon Valley Blvd, then continue on that all the way to San Ramon.

I believe a similar question has been asked before, but I just want to clarify in my mind - you're basically saying NO lane sharing when there's only one lane going your direction, e.g. on HWY 9, Niles, etc. Correct?

Thats exactly what i do.. just sometimes i want to take the frontage road along the freeway sometimes
