"Can you wheelie?"

Way back when I was about 17yo, I thought I was pretty cool when I had this document to show all my friends, which the detective wrote for me (he was in an umarked car, which is why I didn't notice him, even after stuck the light up top to run me down for the next mile or so through the neighborhoods) which documented my "60 foot wheelie through the intersection" :laughing

I thought I was cool. That is, until I had to got to court and see the judge about my misdemeanor and pay the fine. Ouch. :wtf
Wheelies can be very pricey.

cg_ops, you're a nut. I like it.

I got one of those just two years ago, posted related pic in the Bike on Location thread.
Female cop in unmarked car and gave me a break by writing me up simply for “unsafe start”.

"Wheelies can be a wheel saver, too, unweighting the front can prevent a road hazard from causing damage, offficer."

Just changed to a smaller front sprocket on my 2012 Ducati Streetfighter 1098s and was out for a ride. At my first stop sign, hoicked up a wheelie and rode it most of the block and noticed a cop in my mirror when I set it down. I immediately pulled over, removed my helmet and got out my license. He seemed pissed but was taken back by my age, he said he expected someone half my age. I was 63 at the time. He decided not to give me a ticket, I told him thanks I appreciate it, and he said "well I couldn't really give you a ticket for reckless driving, you appeared to be in control". Fuckin' A if that didn't make my day! :banana

Guess it wasn’t a totally unmarked car

Well, I posted this and walked away, the thread delivered. Thes stories are great.

Guess I should use some of my ample free time to go find a parking lot to practice with the DRZ. I've gotten the one wheel salute from other riders on the street when I'm out on my Hyper, and while I'd certainly enjoy returning the favor, I mostly wanna be able to loft the front on the DRZ to clear obstacles as I am otherwise fast enough on it that not being able to get the front up is gonna result in a crash sooner or later.

I can manual over obstacles easily on my MTB, but that doesn't really translate to the DRZ. I have plenty of memories of wheelies looped on bicycles in my youth, so I suspect those hold me back from being a bit more bold with my throttle and body position.

THE wheelie shot...

Back n the day I had the shit covered.

Kept it fairly acceptable until ‘97 when scared the crap out of my old man self almost going off the road. Now an occasional power wheelie is all I got. No more clutch up shit which is the way to do it. :x

Hit wheelie control limits on my multi a couple years ago and it looked like a dash board light show.

Sad days. :(

Yeah, but the good news is "cool" lives on a sliding scale.
We're gonna be the guys getting our scooters all crossed-up in the linoleum lined hallways of our retirement homes.
Fun days. :)

This thread reminds me of a cool experience last year. I took a buddy out to Solano college and in the open parking lot next to the Budweiser factory in fairfield to do some cone drills. He just started riding and didn't get enough practice at CMSP to feel confident in his riding skills on his big cruiser (which I told him would be a handful as a brand new rider).

While we were at Budweiser, working on cone drills, gaggle of Grom hooligans showed up. Among them was a young girl that was KILLING it. I ended up chatting with her for a minute. I told her about my old skills and said that I NEVER had the slow skills she has (albeit, I never had a bike I was willing to drop in order to practice them, either). I asked if I could snap some pics and she said it was no problem. It was awesome to see a teen/20-something girl schooling the guys she was with. IIt was a good day, and I got to teach a little to both, my buddy and their group. They were amazed that I could chase a wheelie down the full parking lot with 1-hand on the bar and I was amazed that they could run my cone slalom in a wheelie :laughing

I love to see this kind of stuff - they're having a blast hooning in a safe place, the company/security was ok with it, and the cops gave thumbs up as they drive by. Such a rare combination of events these days!

I think I remember when you posted about this, and it is very cool. It reminded me, I occasionally see someone in SF on a grom-esq bike doing a very controlled balance point wheelie down market street. Pretty impressive.

I have mine already, , ,

Slow speed balance point was my shot, some a bounce up or clutch.
The hardest was wheelie contest between races, Sat nite Chris Beck arena @ Santa Rosa Fairgrounds, short track. No brakes, Tiger Cub 200cc. 10/15 mph first gear
Before that Honda 90, with a blown out rear hub. We found out that hub rubbers do wear out, clutching wheelies.
When the clutch burned out, the metal plates were re dimpled to grip new friction plates,
Gotta practice.

.

Had a guy destroy his cush drive inserts every other year due to his aggressive clutch ups on a 1k. Never seen anything like it, they looked absolutely hammered. I've never had to replace a cush insert on any bike, and I usually put 20-30k on a bike before moving on.

Big bike with big balled rider problems :laughing

Only trials wheelies-with-a-turn (and similarly stoppies). Never seriously attempted to learn to ride long balance point wheelies.

Being an idiot, I would assuredly abuse this wheelie power, if I had it. I abuse the shit out of rally driving techniques, driving icy / snowy / unplowed roads for 3 months out of the year. I wish I could say rally made me a safer driver, but that is not true -- I take *way* more risks.

Below is the suburban hood. Wide streets, no sidewalks, little traffic, and I've never had cop issues. Whenever fresh snow dumps, it's a non-stop drift fest. And out in the country, it's off the hook. Ah, the smell of glowing turbo in the morning...

(That WRX is on Method wheels and Michelin X-Ices (studless, sadly))

When I was young and impetuous (as opposed to my current status of old and impetuous) I had a Celica that I'd drift the fuck out of.
My fave thing to do was find brand new housing developments when they'd cut the streets into the dirt and mark off the lots but there wasn't any pavement or utility boxes or anything.
Ready-made rally track with minimal impact points. :party

I had a Kawasaki H1 Mach III in my youth. Got rid of it when I realized I was sacred of heights.
