A true 2 seater will be fine in the carpool lane anywhere in the bay area. Bench seat pickups are fine...as long as they only have 2 seatbelts. If it has 3, then you need 3 people.

As always, motorcycles are fine all the time.

Little piece of trivia here, does anyone know why the carpool lane on HWY 80 is for 3 people and not 2 like all the others? Do you know why the hours are 5:30 am to 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to 7 pm for both directions on HWY 80?
Either lobbying by the transit districts to not slow their busses down or due to SFOBB backup? Minimal capacity?

A car manufactured with only two seats can use an HOV-3 lane if both seats are occupied. Motorcycles, even those carrying just one person, are allowed to use the HOV lanes. Some HOV lanes are in operation only during certain hours, which are posted. Outside of those hours, they may be used by all vehicles.

Brash, I can tell you when, but not really why. If I remember right wasn't it because the Carpool hours on the bridge changed. Therefore the HOV hours changed also to accomidate the new bridge hours.

Carpools & motorcycles OK 5-10 AM, 3-6 PM, Mon-Fri

Carpool PM hours changed to 3-7 PM, Mon-Fri

The answer is mainly for the 3 person occupancy. If you notice, I think 80 is the only one with that requirement...please correct me if I'm wrong.

The 3 person rule was put into effect because the city of Berkeley refused to let them build and do the construction on the highway, through their city, unless they made it a 3 person rule. Remember the good ole' days when it used to be the direction of rush hour traffic, instead of both directions.

The Berkeley City Council and Mayor never fail to amuse me with their idiotic rhetoric that is so far out of touch with mainstream America.

And yes, a city can block construction on a highway, even though the state pays for it.

There are a lot w/ 3+ requirements, just not here.
Interesting though...

I thought cali used to be mostly 3 per back in the 80's, but that does make sense, bezerkely is pretty nutz. The political games that all the state, city, and fed's play with our nations roadways kinda make me. :rolleyes

Gees- and I thought it was gonna be the story about the hearse in the carpool lane on the bridge :laughing

Brash, I know it would radically change the nature of your job, but can we PLEASE build a big wall around Bezerkely and call it an insane asylum?

Isn't that what the campus is for?
