CCW - county/state only?

If you have a valid permit to carry, and live in Oregon - but you travel often - how far does that permit reach?

Other counties within state?
Out of state?

If you're a cop in CA and pull me over and I tell you I'm packing with a CCW issued by OR - would I be in trouble?

California does NOT recognize other states CCWs

Hmm. I heard that there was a bill (effective or not yet unknown) - that basically makes all states recognize. Perhaps it's still early and has not been signed into effect yet.

Thanks for the link. :thumbup

Before you travel out of state: Check the website of the Attorney General where you are going to travel to- just in case the info on that website has changed.

BTW- I was surprised that in Vermont- if you are a law abiding citizen and have a valid driver's license- you don't need a CCW.:thumbup

I had a CCW in WA state until I moved here, but alas- no more...:(
For a definitive, and mostly correct and updated list of all 50 states CCW/ gun laws got to:
packing.org
It's pretty good....

Guess that went to;
carryusa.org
Haven't had much time to look at this one yet.
Any input?

Wasn't Howard Dean from VT? NO wonder they didn't want him as president...

:rofl

Part of it is the culture and population of Vermont. Plus, what criminal is going to futz with someone knowing they are likely carrying a concealed weapon?

Contrast DC, or NYC, where the scumballs KNOW their victims aren't carrying, because the law abiding are prohibited from packing. It's funny, when gun control takes over an aera, the crime rate climbs...

Remember, SF wanted the same brand of Gun Control as in DC, and it was luck it didn't.

Also remember, if you're well connected and political, you can get your local Chief or Sheriff to issue the CCW. Ask your local politicians... who are pro gun control... for you, because you don't need it... but have their CCW... to protect themselves. :wtf

Unlike states where they have "must issue" clauses. Just one of the reasons I kinda love Texas... :teeth

T-1 Thunder,

To answer the other half of your question. Yes I would arrest you if you told me you were concealing a firearm on your person. Yes even if you had an Oregon CCW.

The websites given above are fantastic sources of information as far as which counties will give you CCW's (in CA), which won't, and the limitations of a CA CCW. Not to mention other states.

Some states do recognize out-of-state civilian CCW permits. Some do not. I know the State of Florida is one, in particular, that will issue you a CCW as a non-resident of that state. I believe, last I heard, there are 28 states that will honor that permit. CA is not one of them. I believe there are just a few states that allow any non-felon to carry concealed; Florida, Vermont and Texas, come to mind.

LEOs had to fight many years to get a blanket nation-wide CCW for LEOs. Many feel this was the first step toward a nation-wide CCW for civilians. Some civilians were against it, feeling it should have been made for all CCW's and not just LEOs. Whatever the case, police unions and LEO orgs. spent millions getting this federal law passed (HR 218) and even though the final version was cut up like swiss cheese, it passed and we have nation-wide concealed carry for cops.

Essentially, if you have a current LEO CCW-endorsed ID and a current (within 1 year) firearms qualification with an LE agency, a qualified LEO has the same rights to carry concealed in all 50 states, as if they were doing so in their local jurisdiction. No sooner than that law passed, NYC and D.C. attempted to get injunctions to prevent the application of that particular law in their jurisdictions and prevent LEOs from carrying concealed when visiting there.

Keep in mind, Police Chiefs and Police Commissioners serve at the pleasure of their Mayors (or elected City Managers) or city-councils... that makes them slaves to politicians. Rank and file LEOs usually see things differently than Chiefs of Police. So, when you see something is supported by associations of police or fire chiefs, that does not mean (in the slightest) that is is supported by Law Enforcement Officers or Fire Fighters. This is a distinction that is all too frequently lost among the public. The Organization of Police Chiefs came out AGAINST HR 218, while every true LEO organization was in favor of it. That is just one example among many.

I think Kalifornia has a hard time honoring even those issued in Kalifornia.:shocker

Makes me wonder- in the last 2 years; how many folks (as a LEO) have you come across that were CCW? With the person not being a LEO of course.

Does a LEO need a CCW, or just a badge/ID?

In 22+ years, I have come across 6 CA CCW's that were non-LEOs. None in the past 2 years. When I meet visiting LEOs now, I just assume they are carrying, even though I do not always carry when I travel (particularly if I am flying). When I tour on my bike, I always pack a gun with badge and ID attached to the hoslter.

Active, retired and reserve LEOs now have an endorsement on their agency-issued ID card, to comply with HR218. Prior to that, a current/active ID did not require a CCW endorsement, but they were required for retired and reserve IDs... to the best of my recall.

:thumbup Right on MM4L , beore HR218, there was a Federal Clause which allow LEO to carry if they are on Offcial Dept Business, such as Fugitve transport.

Usually if a Police Union, ie Association, Fraternal Order of Police etc, etc, supports something the Police Officer or Fireighter supports it also. Secret when you see a Politician with a line of uniorm officers behind them they do necessarily support the politician, many times they were "asked" (order) to be there as a prop. Just my :2cents
