it is a kickass trip. and you'd be surprised how cheaply...or inexpensively you can do these trips for. Depending on your taste, and ability to do with "less". there are hostels along the way, or those notel motels, which cost maybe 5-10 bucks a night. a bed, a lockable door and sleep......food is really cheap...just make sure it is well cooked..hahaha. gas is about the same price, sometimes more expensive, but it all works out. it was funny, we were in el salvador, and at a random gas station and they had 98 octane gas. hmph! go figure. hell, you could stay in mexico alone, and not go that far south and still get one of the best trips of your life.

right now, I'm putting more money into trackdays and trackbike, so the dough is lower for the trips. but I got a few coming up.

a balls out run to Rocky Point, Mexico in May. 4-5 days. 1 day down, 1 day back up, and 2-3 days there. drinking, eating good food, checking the scenery (tuna boats). it's about 818 miles one way. anyone up for it? late May 2006. oh, yeah..forgot: Oakland, Ca. to Rocky Point, Mexico. and there's a Roger Clyne concert going on...do you know how much wool is at those concerts...damn!

squid, dude, the drz would be awesome for a trip like this. there's all kinds of 125's and 250's buzzing around the city in traffick...like ants trying to get somewhere. enjoy that trip.

GOLD!!!! :newbie

drop me a line. what do you ride? I used to live in tucson also. it's about 4 hours from Tucson or PHoenix to Rocky Point. I'd be coming from the west, thru Yuma, and meeting at the border would be ok.

i'll post up a thread about it, or just keep an eye on here.

later

I ride an '05 GSX-R 600, yeah meeting in Yuma shouldn't be too much of a problem. What route were you thinking of taking?

Yeah and riding long distances on a sport bike is ummmmm interesting lol me and a buddy went to phoenix and back a couple times last year. We are both from Cali and missed In-n-out so we went to Phoenix just to have some ;)

If you can tolerate a slower rider, I would like to join….

PS: I don't speak Spanish.

I don't speak spanish either, I used to be really good, but after you don't use it for like 4 years it kinda fades ;)

I am sure you would be able to keep up.... anyone else interested in this trip?? If we stay the night in Tucson, I know quite a few good places for us to go and hang out at :)

Depending on when you leave in May I would be down. My only constraint is I plan to leave for Panama on June1st, but am looking for dry runs on the equipment before then. Let me know.

how did you lose paco in Mexico City?

well, when you come into mexico cicty, about 60 miles out, the hwy. turns into a 6 lane hwy...going one way (12 lanes total) and after crossing inside the outer ring, paco was in the lead, and took a wrong exit or fork in the road, and managed to stop right as he exited, on the side of the road...then he waved me to the left onto the right route. I tried to wait for him, by going slower, but at the risk of being swallowed up by traffick or hit....i had to keep moving. didn't see him again. I made it to the north side of town...pulled into an american hotel, and called my uncle who lived nearby, and he came out to find me, so I would have a place to crash out. Emailed paco that night, and he made it to Queretaro...he was on a mission to get into the states soon....so it worked out in the end.

Once in Mexico, from guatemala, we still had a few hours to burn....so we made our way out of the southern portion and headed north/west.....towards Oaxaca. We came to a small town called Santo Domingo Tehuantepec.....and it was getting late. We weren't sure about a hotel, I was okay paying a little more money and getting something with a decent shower...but the place we stopped to ask for info. at, wanted 100 bucks. for the night...WTF?! hell no. as we rolled thru, I saw these guys on motorcycles parked on the side of the road. I rolled over to ask for some help, or info. on a local place to stay. they were from about an hour away, and rode in to meet some friends and were going to a club meeting in Salina Cruz, about 17 km. away. we sat and chatted with them for a bit, and told them where we'd been riding, and they were like....HOLY SHIT! "We rode an hour to get here, and we thought we had a long ass ride..." (all in spanish of course) after we told them we'd been riding since about 7am....12 hours earlier.

they invited us back to meet their club president, in Salina Cruz, and said that the prez. had a few rooms to let at his place. so i told the other guys, and we rode out of our way 17 km. arrived at the prez's. house, and he was this ex-hwy. patrol guy, long hair, riding around in shorts, flip flops, long hair, on a chinese knockoff of what looked like a honda rebel cruiser. fucking hilarious and cool. it's mexico, what are you gonna do.

he took us in to his little restaurant, attached to his house, and they served us dinner, best broiled fish I had ever, and beers, and then he would absolutely not accept payment of any sort....we had to do the whole, "no, I have to pay you" and he would say, " no I won't take your money" and we would say, " no, I can't take this generosity" and stuff back and forth. we finally relented. and he told us the rooms upstairs were ours for the night, no charge either. damn! true mexican hospitality..."mi casa es su casa"

they then invited us to the club meet, so we all road down in a group ride....pretty cool and we hung out with all of the rest of the guys, while their mechanics went over our bikes, talked shop, bikes, and took our bikes around the block to try them out. this is a bad photo of myself, the club president, and squeely...again, wish I had a better camera at the time.

it's funny how things work in mexico....everyone always seem to have an angle on something...you want things done...they can be done...and I learned one thing in my time living and working in mexico....anything that can be done, will be done. in other words, just because someone says it can't be done...doesn't necessarily mean it won't be done.

at the club meeting, I was pretty damn tired, my leg was still sore, and I was trying to make a discreet retreat to the rooms after about 2 hours of socializing, and we wanted to send some emails. so the prez. took us to his daughters internet cafe, hooked us up on the web for free, and we checked in to our families....hospitality that we would be able to pay back in a few months. more on that later.

after the internet cafe, I mentioned that I was going to head back to the room, and take a break, well, the prez. would not have his club sitting around while his honored guests went back to his house...so he rallyed up all the guys, and there we go riding back to the prez's. house to finish the meet there. too cool.

I crashed hard that night, and then we were up early the next day, to ride north to Mexico City. we said our farewells, and traded contact info.

the Prez. and his buddies will be riding north to the United states and then they will be riding to Milwaukee for the Harley Davidson 100th.....and they will stay at Squeely Dan's house, who lives in Milwaukee. I'll dig up a photo, but when the time came, they all came up to Milwaukee, and camped out in Squeely's backyard....it was cool, and hospitality was repaid.

we headed north to Oaxaca, land of Mezcal...and yes, there are other places for mezcal and tequila...but oaxaca is also famous for it....I had the black and white film going again...and took a few shots....we stopped in this town, that claimed to be the center of all mezcal.....here's an old well, with maguey plants, that are used to make the sweet yet disastrous concoction called mezcal.
