Cheapest bare minimum insurance?

are sweet.
Interested in how much everyone's paying and through who.

I'm 26 years old, MSF rider's course, no DUI's/accidents but colorful driving history, WA driver's license but living in SJ.

1993 GSXR 750.

Looking for the cheapest deal around...any suggestions?

usually first place to check would be with whatever car insurance you have if you have a car. second would be state farm around here they seem to be the best deal in town for a lot of us. also you live in the bay area and you want cheap insurance? jsut remember that when/if you get into something and the other driver probably did even less for insurance.
i have state farm, no accidents/tix 03 r1 and pay just under 800 a year.

I was just about to suggest McGraw, but Rafael beat me to it. :x

Just curious, why do you want the cheapest deal around?

Nothing wrong with spending less money, but as you seem to be an upcoming star rider, and if I may ... maintenance, protective gear and insurance are 3 items not to be cheap. When shit happens, and in addition to licking your wounds, you don't want to armchair-quarterback yourself with destructive thoughts such as "I should've this", "I shoud've that".

Your bike is old and cheap, probably less than $2K. Forget about covering it. You can always find another. Forget about roadside assitance and other bells and whistles. You need good coverage for your own hospital bills, for those you may send to a hospital, for property you may damage (and yes, bikes can cause quite a great deal of damage), and for the other road users with "cheapest bare minimum insurance" (the "uninsured/underinsured") that may hit you and send you to a hospital. If you're rich (not my case) or have good health insurance via work (my case), then it may be another story.

BARF is full of stories of bikers that wished they had spent an extra $30 for the next level of coverage. Heed those advices.

Ride hard, ride safe!

Cheers,

Marc.

Why insure at all? Minimum insurance is barely better than no insurance at all, the levels of coverage are a joke. You avoid the ticket, but do almost nothing for yourself of the people you might injure. Best of luck going bankrupt when you t-bone a car and your insurance doesn't come close to covering the liability you have to the victims. What's that saying about being penny wise and pound foolish...

Yeah. I'm in a similar situation... Spotty record. I still pay for half a million in liability coverage, as well as UIM. Also, do you have health insurance? If not, you don't belong anywhere near a bike.

you might spend a couple of bucks more, but i can't say enough about the customer service i receive at state farm. they are so attentive and pretty affordable. i don't know anything about mcgraw, but i've had to deal with esurance and liberty mutual in the past, and they both really sucked.

remember... you get what you pay for. if all you want is liability then by all means just get the cheapest. but if you want full coverage + uninsured driver and whatever else, go for state farm.

I have super high limits on my insurance for this exact reason. It would suck it hit a Ferrari or some exotic car in the hills.

PM me...I work with a guy who gives me a great deal on several types of insurance including motorcycle ins.

Honestly, if you want cheaper insurance step one is buy the right bike. My KLR250 was like $15/year for minimum insurance, and while I never investigated it I'm pretty sure 10x higher levels of coverage were only a few dollars more (didn't ride it enough, or even own it long enough, to bother).

To give some rough idea of quoted rates I've had in the past, with the 250 being 1 'unit':
KLR250: 1x
KLR650: 4x
KTM625: 4x
YZF-R1: 20x
(This is minimum, not what I actually have.)

I'm sure you're not going to sell off your bike, from what I've seen anybody who has a gixxer is very attached to it, but it's perhaps something to keep in mind with your next bike :dunno

note: in regards to the actual dollar amount of my rates, I have a sparkling clean record. This is all w/ Geico.

I have State Farm and my KLR is $47/6 months, liability only $250k/$500k/$100k (obviously not the legal minimums but with all the money I saved by buying a KLR I can afford the $6/month).

ABSOLUTLY call GMAC insurance. I have a clean record, 55yo, and have basic liability for SEVEN motorcycles all over 650cc for $183.00 total. That's for a year for all six. Let us know what you hear. 800-325-1088

if you don't have any assets and your bike is not worth much. just buy the minimum liability.

companies like mcgraw suck if you have to file a claim. state farm, aaa, etc have much better service (in most cases).

be careful of VC 12505(c) if you're a resident of CA... 10 days to acquire a CA license.

I had McGraw when I crashed on my Kawi a couple years ago. Absolutely hands down the worst representation ever from an insurance company. Beyond Geico and Progressive in terms of poor service and representatives that don't even have a clue what they're looking at when doing assessments. That's pretty bad considering how crummy Geico and Progressive are!

Never again will I go the cheap route. It's just not worth it. I've been with State Farm ever since and the best part is, they're still cheap IMO but the service is without comparison.
