I used t love the Trappist. But they kept raising the price and douche factor. And that Reuben, no. Sorry. It's a dry piece of toast with one or two pieces of corned beef and some frigging sauerkraut. It used to be good, but then they kept raising the price and cutting the portions.

For a good reuben, go to Saul's in Berkeley.

budman,
The best Reuben in the B.A. is supposedly in The Refuge in San Carlos (also closer to budman probably) . It is a $17 Reuben though.. but at least the meat inside seems to be a lot and thick slices too! I've had it, it's good. Still expensive though :laughing

I'd go back to the Trappist in Oak because of th ebeer; since I've been there twice already. OK, thanks for the warning for the douche factor. Who knows, maybe it's either a function of the Oak or simply something else

I'm not much of an epicurean, but I was impressed by the food at NOPA in SF.

$25-50 per person, reservations highly recommended.

I hate fish as a rule, but the halibut I bit was awesome, and my entree was worth the price.

If you're ever down on Carmel Valley Road, we recommend the Running Iron. $12-20 per person, great food and atmosphere, very moto-friendly, no reservations needed. Extensive menu and a full bar.

Had an Excellent breakfast at a place called The Old Hickory Pit in Walnut Creek next to Kaiser yesterday.

$$
Huge servings
Awesome omelets
Plenty of free parking

Vesta in Redwood City is probably my favorite restaurant right now. Get the sausage & honey pizza!

Tu Lan on 6th St in SF at Market. Hole in the wall Vietnamese place; they were closed down by the health department so often they had to close for over a year and change ownership / management :laughing. It's much cleaner now, not that anyone I know ever got sick the hundreds of times we ate there.

The imperial rolls and lemon beef salad are phenomenal. Everything is under $7.

Bull Valley Roadhouse in Port Costa. Fantastic.

Fried chicken from Rickey's in Rodeo. A complete dive and a bit scary, but the chicken. :drool

Fremont Diner near Sonoma. Great breakfast and lunch place.

Tons of great restaurants in Sonoma County, hard to go wrong.

The Starks Restaurant Group alone has several, all different, all worth trying.

But for cheap eats and a great lunch (or dinner) if you're ever near Sonoma/Glen Ellen try Juanita Juanitas.

Looks like a dump on the outside, don't let that turn you off.

Cool.... lots of good suggestions.

Down my way we have Sundance Steak House. Use to be called Sundance Mine Company and has been a family fav since I was a teen ager. Great food.

For dinner reservations are high suggested... they are typically packed. For lunch you can slip in. It has a smallish bar, but if you get there around 4 you can land a seat and some good appetizers. Figure on going 50 per person if you are going steak or prime rib and having a glass of wine or a cocktail. They have some great sports memorabilia too. :cool

Also the world famous Chef Chu's
This is also a family business and from the pictures on the wall you know it is well known. Lots of celebs and politico's like to get their photo taken with Chef Chu.. I had a blast watching the Giants clinch the Series with him last year as he is a big sports fan.

If you like Chinese this place will hit you right in the belly with awesome and fresh cuisine.
Not super pricey, but it is easy to spend a lot because you want a lot!

My favorite Bay Area burger joint.

Al's Big Burgers in Albany across the street from Albany Bowl.

Has not changed in the 35 years I have been eating there. Mesquite flaming grill and friendly folks.

This is my fancy dining/gourmet/expensive/special treat restaurant list for SF in no particular order:

Michael Mina
Quince
RN74
Fluer De Lys
Gary Danko
Crustecean
Bix
Town Hall
Bar Crudo
A16
Range
Craftsman and Wolves
Saison
Chez Maman
Murray Circle at Cavallo point

I remember the food at some of these places but to review them all is more than I can get into in this post, but suffice it to say you won't be disappointed at anyplace on the list. Give me a little more time and I'll work up my list for places outside SF like Napa and along the north and south coast.

If you are up for something adventurous and have a similar group of people to take with you (about 4 of you is the perfect number) I recommend Asmara Restaurant on Telegraph at 51st in Oakland.

It is Ethiopian food served family style from a big plate in the center of the table. You pick up the food with the "bread" that comes with it. My favorite is the Doro and Gomen.

Love Ethiopian food; there's one within walking distance of my house here in Santa Rosa.

Cool list mr. Futs.
Look forward to hearing more... although it is a rare day I escape to so far away for a meal. :(

With that said here is a really good Mexican spot Vive Sol I like this place for a business lunch where you can introduce some fresh high quality eats to a friend or a client.

I have only been to the Mt. View location and once the weather is warmer a large patio makes it even more fun. Full bar is always a consideration for me... so yeah.. they have it. :Port
