CHP Lane Splitting Tips issued

Yeah!!! Now the media campaign can get off the ground.
Hope to have more info on that after the next CMSP committee meeting in October.

Like I have said before I think our Guidelines are better, but we don't have 800K to spend on public awareness...

Hopefully we will see this on the news tonight.

You are literally the first to see them as they were just released to committee members.

I like that their tips are not only for us as riders but for drivers as well.

Agreed.. part of it from the beginning. That is important for the public awareness campaign and the news media to blast!

Interesting point about "Drivers in far left lane should move to left...". It's nice when people move to let you pass, but I'm afraid it will be abused/misunderstood by "bad" riders, who feels it's a right and not a privilege to split lanes.

From my work with the Committee on these tips:

Legal:
1. Per the vehicle code splitting between lanes on a minimum two lanes in the same direction.

2. Splitting at the speed limit or below.

Illegal:
1. Is anything a CHP Officer or other LEO deem wreckless per that section of the vehicle code.

2. On the shoulder.

3. Beyond the posted speed limit.

Gray areas remain on single lane passes where a car makes room for you.
It is not addressed as legal and I have been warned about that already myself.

Incomplete.

Nothing about appropriate use of wheelies or rev bombing.

It also doesn't mention anything about riding between the car pool lane and the #1 lane (especially in areas where they have those demarcated by double yellows).

I appreciate the space limitations, looks good overall.

Agreed. Should note to motorcyclists that it is not required for vehicles to move out of their way, and that revving is not appropriate in such situations...you know the kind. Unfortunately we have a lot of entitled assholes riding, I see it more and more everyday.

Nice. Also pleased to see it addresses both riders and cagers.

Things that stood out for me:
- split up to speed limit, ok, that makes things real clear, leaves me plenty of headroom.
- anything reckless is ticketable regardless of speed limit.
- use high beams during the day.

The high-beams part is interesting, since I thought that was a ticket.

I use clearwaters at their lowest brightness, guess I can turn them up a smidge...

I think this is even in the California motorcyclist handbook, whatever it is actually called. I understand *why*, but it surprised me too, because it is annoying as hell and I also thought it was on shaky legal ground.
