Cited for using the "bus lane", Bay Bridge

It's quite simple, im not sure where the confusion is. It's open for carpool during carpool hours and busses only otherwise. The sign is a nice reminder of what time it is

And for the record that's not an exit lane, the exit breaks off from the lane and noone is forced to take it

This. I use this lane everyday that I work in SF. It's not exit-only.

*Nobody* knows nor cares what is a "lane striped as an exit".

And for the record that's not an exit lane, the exit breaks off from the lane and noone is forced to take it

It's not exit-only.

maybe my previous post wasn't clear but really, there's no reason to jam on your brakes and block traffic at the last minute. If I'm counting correctly there are 8 lanes where the bus lane exits. If you're in the #8 lane you have to change lanes and exit to take the bus lane, just like many offramps all over the place (it's actually more clear because there's a dashed line across the exit, unlike most offramps). 300 - 400 after the bus lane takes off traffic in the #8 lane merges with #7 .

When I see a sign I usually read from top to bottom - the first thing I see is BUSES ONLY. If I have time and keep reading I get to the exceptions. BUt the buses only part is pretty clear.

An honest mistake is still a mistake. Lots of people take that lane on non-carpool hours, I see it happen pretty often on the weekends. CHP doesn't have the ability to ticket everyone that goes through, but they do park there frequently to ticket offenders. Prepare to grab your ankles, the ticket will be close to $500.

Now is a good time to begin a campaign to make this a 24 hour motorcycle lane ;)

Some of this sounds like by Federal law we as Motorcyclists should be able to use any HOV lane.

Exclusive- or Preferential-Use Lanes for High Occupancy Vehicles

21655.5. (a) The Department of Transportation and local authorities, with respect to highways under their respective jurisdictions, may authorize or permit exclusive or preferential use of highway lanes for high-occupancy vehicles. Prior to establishing the lanes, competent engineering estimates shall be made of the effect of the lanes on safety, congestion, and highway capacity.

(b) The Department of Transportation and local authorities, with respect to highways under their respective jurisdictions, shall place and maintain, or cause to be placed and maintained, signs and other official traffic control devices to designate the exclusive or preferential lanes, to advise motorists of the applicable vehicle occupancy levels, and, except where ramp metering and bypass lanes are regulated with the activation of traffic signals, to advise motorists of the hours of high-occupancy vehicle usage. No person shall drive a vehicle upon those lanes except in conformity with the instructions imparted by the official traffic control devices. A motorcycle, a mass transit vehicle, or a paratransit vehicle that is clearly and identifiably marked on all sides of the vehicle with the name of the paratransit provider may be operated upon those exclusive or preferential use lanes unless specifically prohibited by a traffic control device.

20. Why are motorcycles allowed in some HOV lanes?

Motorcycles are permitted by federal law to use HOV lanes, even though they typically carry only one passenger. The explanation for the federal law is that allowing motorcycles to use HOV lanes keeps them moving, and it is considered safer to keep two-wheel vehicles moving than it is to have them traveling in start-and-stop traffic conditions. The individual states can choose to override this provision of federal law, if they determine that there is an inherent safety risk by allowing motorcycles to use HOV lanes. In the State of California, motorcycles are permitted to use HOV facilities unless a traffic control device specifically prohibits them.

Carpool /HOV Lanes

A carpool lane is a special freeway lane only for motorcycles, buses, and/or carpools. You may use a carpool lane or onramp if your vehicle carries the minimum number of people required for the carpool lane or you drive a low-emission vehicle displaying a special DMVissued decal. Motorcycle riders may use designated carpool lanes, unless otherwise posted.

Signs at the onramp or along the freeway tell you the minimum number of people required for the carpool and the hours the carpool requirement applies. The pavement in this lane is marked with a diamond symbol (?) and the words "Carpool Lane." These lanes are also known as high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. Do not cross over double parallel solid lines to enter or exit any carpool lane except at designated entry or exit places.

Vehicles towing trailers are typically not allowed to use carpool lanes because they must drive more slowly and are usually restricted to the right-hand lane.

Highway onramp with carpool lane.

Well, we can. But the lane in question is a HOV lane only at certain times. Otherwise it is bus only.

The big problem I've seen is people trying not to go to SF end up taking that lane. Immediately after that lane is the last Oakland exit. But they put the sign right next to that lane, making it look like the Bus lane is the last Oakland exit.

I'm surprised they don't use the fastrak to ticket any thing that's not a bus.

They do.

Correct.

I don't think the sign are clear either! But I thought we were never allowed to ride in that lane. All these years and I thought it was a bus only lane:laughing

They do.

.

I actually do not see a huge charge on my fastrak statement; and I did go once on a Saturday through this again!!!

I think I must add that the firmly painted Fastrak lines (i think) add to the confusion. Like who would paint that if it's not allowed at all times?!?!? :afm199

+1. I never bothered using it as I could never decide what the deal was at freeway speeds. I guess its ok at stuck in traffic speeds when it is actually open...

Not quite as bad as the 'no left turn sign' somewhere in SF with two excepts on it. Does the second 'except' add to the first 'except' or does it 'except' from it? Very Monty Python-esque and you figure you are safer just never making a left there.

They may use FasTrak to ticket some offenses, but not bus lane violations.

There was a while where I rarely drove to SF except on a bike during commute hours. Going to a concert ~9:30PM in my cage w/just my wife & I, I just went on autopilot and drove down the right hand bus/carpool lane and sailed through.

No beep on the transponder, no cops waiting to pounce. Honestly, your chances of going through without issue are probably astronomically higher than getting caught. It's just that when you get caught, it's a way bigger than the $4-6 it costs to cross legitimately.

Sorry to hear about your ticket OP. But yeah, it's fairly clearly stated that the lane(s) on the far right are bus lanes that are open to carpools/HOV during posted hours.

I will agree with you that the signage and lane markings are not the easiest to interpret at 50 mph (lol, when does anyone get to go through the toll plaza at that speed!), but they're not really misleading. Just confusing.

Oh really? I'll just write that ticket more then :laughing

Well isn't it just a fine not moving violation? Pay it and don't do it Again :dunno

It's a moving violation, +point(s) on my license.
$490 , or $547 + whatever the traffic school charges if I don't want it visible to my insurer.
I'm pretty sad about it because I wasn't trying to get away with anything, didn't know I was in the wrong (I'm an eagle-scout) and NEVER would have been in that lane if I thought it was illegal.
I got laid off in November from the oilfields in AK (price of oil) and likely won't have any work for like seven months.
A ticket that costs half of a grand is about the worst thing I can imagine right now ;(

It appears nobody has asked yet, so:
What CVC and supporting detail is written on the citation?

The signs and presumption of knowledge required to comply with them are as clear as mud to a casual user.

More importantly, the wasted utilization of an exceptionally expensive asset when it reverts to "Bus only" is absolute insanity.

But then we live in CA so what's new :x
