I’ve always used WD-40 sprayed on a rag to clean, then Dupont Teflon to lube. Kerosene on rag sounds like a cheaper alternative.

What I didn’t know was how to clean a very dusty/dirty/muddy chain from riding on dirt, without using a huge amount of solvent. Hot soapy water and a rag seem like the best first step to get the dirt off, followed by towel-drying, WD-40 and then lube.

Shaft-drive is a beautiful thing...
