I am not sure where to put this, so I put it here. I am looking to interview with a company in SF. I currently live in the south, south bay. With no traffic I am looking at over an hour commute. With traffic 2-3. At the moment I do not have two wheels, because I am not ready to give up my dining room to store a Ducati. Does anyone do a similar style commute in a cage or on a bike? What is the parking situation like as well in SF? Just looking for some added insight.

Biggest advice is to take 280 and avoid 101 at all costs. There are few spots where it slows down, but nothing like a rolling parking lot that is 101 during commute hours.

Also move your dining table and park ducati there, or any bike with a comfortable seating position.

Yikes. Both traffic and parking wise I would think you'd want a bike. Personally, I wouldn't voluntarily sign up for that commute even with one. However if you are thinking about it, I don't recommend buying a ducati, or any exotic actually for the purpose of commuting. Keep that for your fun bike. It would be like getting a sports car to be your grocery getter.

Get a cheap, easy and cheap to maintain commuter bike. Kepp the duc for your weekend fun.

Hell hath frozen over, God needs advice on how to part the Bay Area seas of traffic! :devil

I'd suggest finding a BART route (not everyone is cut out to commute on bike year-round) but otherwise look for a reliable beater.

Can't you just command that the position get moved to where you are?

Couple BARFers have similar distance commutes and have had good things to say about the Honda NC700x (IIRC that's the model). Cheap, great gas mileage, good storage, comfortable for longer rides.

Take Caltrans into the city and then have an uber driver waiting. The cost will be less then parking your car in the city any day of the week.

Taking Caltrans would be awesome, then they can fix your tire on the road too!

A friend of a friend commuted from San Jo to SF, but took off at 4am , so maybe you should do that!

or , try to use Caltraim!!!! It's a train and it's red. Luckily that would mean God loves public transit!!! :thumbup:thumbup

Hmm...maybe someone will be getting a flat tire today with a seemingly unlucky placement of a 16 penny nail. :afm199

I've wanted a Ducati since I was a kid. Now I almost have the means to do so. I commuted on a GSXR and it wasn't too bad. But I would get a 2nd bike for the wet weather commute for sure. Not all women like seeing two motorcycles for a kitchen table. I was thinking of the Yamahammer FZ09 for a commuter.

What is parking like up in the city? This company is near Civic center if you need a point of reference.

Anything near Civic Center will bet pissed on, knocked over, or stolen. Seriously, do not get a bike for commuting that will break your heart should something happen to it. Get full insurance for any commuter. Your other option is to ride to your local BART station or Caltrain and come into the SF. Parking around there is horrible and the neighborhood significantly increases the risk of unfortunate circumstances.

Something upright, FZ9/Dual Sport/Motard will do a lot more for you than any sportbike commuting.

Parking in the city is terrible and expensive.

Honestly putting that many miles on a Duc as a daily commuter is just a bad idea IMHO. I am not saying you would be uncomfortable, but you will be spending a lot of money, and degrading a nice bike for utility.

I have a an F800GS I commute on and even though that bike is designed as more of a distance bike, and my commute is short, I still lament not using something a little cheaper as my daily.

Upright ergos, easy to maintain, safety features, and economical are the goals in my mind for a commute. Not sure which Duc you are considering but I pretty much know none of them cover the economical one. :laughing

Just food for thought. :2cents

Agreed except for that far a motard is not a good option.

This is probably your best bet to keep your sanity.

parking in the city is like $5 an hour if you're in a car and $0.70 an hour if you're on a motorcycle, and parking on the street

the problem with caltrams is that it doesn't stop near the Civic Center so you'll have to walk 20 minutes

Caltrain + muni or bicycle. Fuck that commute.

Abby I am honored that you would take 10 minutes to find all those pretty pictures and post about how I misspelled Caltrain.

Thanks buddy!

Yes and the 100.00 ticket for missing the meter by 1 min is the best. Oh it doesn't stop there, just park anywhere and find a free ticket even though you paid to park!

!

Well, nothing better to do I guess! I could complain to IT that the recent *$ install / DLLs / 4.5 whatever is making my computer work slow, but IT takes 2 weeks and they never come!!!!

I did it the other way, from SF to SJ, and while it wasn't fun to be commuting 2 hours a day, at least as soon as I got on the train, it was my time again.
