Going to start my new job in Mountain View (right off Ellis St. on 101) and I'll be coming from Oakland. Anyone commute to their 9-5 using the same route? Is 880 to 84 faster in terms of traffic or 880 to 237? How long is your commute? I'll be riding my '02 F4i and I'll be lane sharing during stop 'n go traffic also to save some time. Thanks in advance!

You will have to experiment with both ways to see what works for you.

I would rather take 580 or take 101 S, before rolling down 880.

880 is rough. Thankfully I don't have to commute on it. Takes bravery to lane share on that freeway. You'll find 101 is lane sharing friendly (Except for a few tight spots just before SFO). Easiest commute there is.

Would that be AOL, Symantec, or Veritas?

I don't agree with this at all. 880 traffic is faster moving and has wider lanes then 101. I would much rather split 880 then 101.

Having done that exact commute for a year I found the 84 bridge to 880 the fastest route.

84 to 880 on the way home? i agree with you southbound

so, i've done that morning ride south bound several times from my GFs house and found that 880 south to 237 is the best. take 237 all the way to the middlefield exit, right on middlefield and right on ellis. i don't suggest 237 to 101 north in the morning cuz the onramp gets pretty clogged with all the traffic. also, i don't like paying the toll so skipping the bridges is kinda mandatory southbound. 880 north or south at the mission interchange in freemont will be kinda hairy for another year or so as construction finishes up but it's not that bad anymore. there is a carpool lane flyover from 880 to 237 in both directions which is pretty sweet.

on the way home, head up 101 as long as possible because i feel that 880n in the afternoon is worse than 101n, not proof just a hunch, and bridges are free east bound :teeth i'd also skip 238 east from 880 if you want to head up 580. the offramp backs up for ever and by the time you've gotten over through traffic, merged etc you'd be at the 880/980 interchange already (at least that's what it feels like) the congestion eases significantly after the 238 exit
