Coolant-Heated Handlebars

Can turn it off for riding on hot days?

One good drop on some rough stuff, once that bar gets bent, those threads/sealant wont seal....could of ran heated grips i guess

It really should have a valve in each line, not just one. That way you won't lose all your coolant if you dump the bike and get a crack in the bars.

That doesn't look like it would flow/circulate well enough to heat the bars. It would allow some heat but I wonder if it would get cooled off before reaching the bars. I've been on some cold rides and you can hold the radiator and it still is hardly warm enough to keep your fingers flexible.

If you'll follow the link, you'll see that he has to keep the valve almost closed because it got so hot so quickly.

Really...was saving $1-200 on a set of heated grips just that much of a bank breaker?

Especially since generic warmers are like $30. Neat idea probably borne from plenty of spare time, extra parts laying around and an inherent cheapness that leads to this type of awesomely pointless innovation.

:thumbup

No worries, this is the Barf and before this is over the improvement section will figure out how to heat the tires at track day too, maybe a few water proof slip joints...:laughing

Waiting for the seat heater idea to pop up.

I wonder about being able to effectively circulate water to the ends of the bars when the inlet and outlet is in center. I should watch the video.

I think the ability to heat you handle bars with something that works as long as your motor is running is a big plus over heated grips. Especially since dirtbikes already electrically challenged and probably couldn't heat electric grips.

wait just a moment, didn't you just do that?

No battery on that bike to run leccy grips. He tried a couple of cordless drill batts but the need to access for charging + low run time ruled the idea out.

I was thinking about piping some hot air from the radiator or engine to the hand guards on my DL650 but then I found some Oxford heated grips in the parts forum and I snapped them up for $50. Much easier project.

click the link. inlet at ends.

this was kindof a "duh" thing to me. boiling water is effing hot!

Pretty terrible idea in terms of engineering contingency but the creativity is hard to deny.

cool idea and a great proof of concept.

+1 to rudolfs001. he needs another valve on the outlet so that he can shut the whole system in the event of a crash. I don't think id add anything else actually.
