Rumination is something I have to fight regularly. Last Saturday we met some friends we hadn't seen in quite a while and I gave them a 30,000 foot overview of what our lives have been like the last several years.
Didn't mention my son's divorce last year, or my daughter's failure to launch at age 23 due to mild autism and ADHD, or the increasing care my in laws are needing as they age, or my dreams of retiring 6 years ago going "poof".
All week I've been ruminating on what I wished I'd said.
But telling them all this wouldn't have changed anything. Maybe I would have gotten some sympathetic words or a "look on the bright side" comment. Then the conversation would have moved on.
Still, I'm in this loop and it brings me down.
I have plenty of good stuff going on in my life, so why do I stay stuck on the bad stuff?
Wallowing in it feels familiar and comfortable in a weird way.
