CVC 22507.8 Handicapped Parking Violations

A single HC ticket nets the city's general fund 2x more money than an average red light conviction and 4x more than a stop sign ticket.

I agree it is nice to provide convenient parking for less mobile people but I think it is sad that redlights and stopsigns are not viewed as being some of the most heinous shit you can do next to driving drunk.

This has action line written all over it. If the police aren't focused on something that seems so offensive, the newspaper (or the evening news) would jump all over that.

I'm sort of at school in LA right now, so all I'm going to do is encourage 2wheelbear to try the mercury news action line, or call up the evening news. I can just imagine how all the crazy ambush news teams we have down here would drool over mm4L's story about how the police management don't see HC enforcement as a priority.

I read a pamphlet about not being a jerk, and it had a HC parking section which said you shouldn't even use the spaces to turn around in. This just seems like one of those bad as drunk driving things.

In OR, they had retired officers, Vets, and other people who actually use the places giving out tickets with training. Heck, McMinville PD use to have a reserve car do it 2 times a week for 8 hour shifts.

what's so jerky about using a HC space to turn around in? a 3 point turn puts you in the spot for what, 5 seconds?

i use a h/c parking when i need it. i have a bum left knee cap (tib&fib w/ permanent damage) i do try & go about normal life like everyone else, but there are those days when im not very mobile. i see so many violaters out there its not even funny. it seems like a majority of the time it is some family hoppin out of there SUV. they are displayin a permanent placecard .everyone gets out, & walks into the store. meanwhile they snaged the spot.i do a very keen observation, as i walk up using my cane & i mugg the shiot out of them. i make eye contact with the driver a middle aged woman who was driving the SUV while in the store & they see me gimpn along . she then walks by with her head down knowing she did me wrong. im not one to say anything but i think a tire slashin should have been done. i just think it would be funny for them to change a tire in a h/c spot while the five O rolls up & asks what your disability, uum i have a tooth ache.
this happens way more than we think, we just let it slide. unconsiderate bastids! thanks for lettin me vent, i feel your pain!

Uhmmm

Ya know those private security/parking enforcement folks that the shopping centers are using? (The ones that write you a ticket beacause you were in the supermarket for 31 minutes?)

Well, I'm walking to my car and I see the security parking enforcement mobile with it's orange lights blazing...

He's writing a parking ticket on a car accross the row...

While HE is parked in a handicapped zone...

I had to ask- Excuse me sir?

Yes?

Do YOU have a placard?

He says, "No, I'm security, I'm writing a ticket"

I asked, "Uhmmm, you realize that's a 275 dollar ticket?"

"Yes, but I'm security"

"And what makes YOU exempt, sir?"

I had a really nice conversation with the owner of the company after I drove off :laughing

Don't know. It's apparently the courteous thing to do. I don't really agree with it, so I only try to avoid doing it.

Every time I see the campus police (or the fake police) giving out parking tickets, they park their cars in service vehicle spots. In all my years at college, I have never seen one of them in an HC spot. I have seen them nail the people who pull into the spots and get out, even when they just stand by their cars.

Come to think of it, the LA news dod an ambush journalism piece on the HC parking at UCLA. They filmed a bunch of students using placards, and made a pretty damn big deal about it. Journalists love this kind of story... They get to act like the big hero, exposing evildoers and helping victimized people.

BTW- The UC Cops are the real police. Parking enforcement are usually non-sworn employees of the police department.

The service vehicle spots are Ok for them to park in- they are providing a "service".

:laughing They aren't the "fake" police unless they are carrying fake handcuffs and a fake gun.

from what i heard is , that the uc police have more jurisdiction then a city cop being they are run by the state. i dont know for sure. maybe a leo chime in & clarify. i have been pulled over by cal state hayward police on mission blvd & i wasnt on campus at all.(xpired registration) he called back up & it was hayward police. hayward police wrote the ticket.

You can do a search in here- the topic has been covered a few times.

A sworn Peace Officer are police officers anywhere in the state and in some cases within a few miles into adjacent states. City Police, County Sheriff, State Park Ranger, Campus Police.

Peace Officers get their authority from the state. They may be paid by a city, county, college, park district, the state or another agency, but they are all the same when it comes to authority.

As sworn peace officers, they can make arrests anywhere in the state. The problem comes when they don't have the paperwork (ticket book, etc..) for the jurisdiction they happen to be within when a violation occurrs. If I work in the East Bay and I am doing an investigation in East Palo Alto or any other city or county and I see a drunk driver or reckless driver, or any other criminal act, I can step in, just like I was in my town. That does not mean I can't turn the arrest over to the locals to process or have them come write a ticket , or just borrow one of their cite books to use a local ticket to put the offense through the local court.

The campus cops are real cops here. There's also the parking fairies, (aka fake police) and the student campus security officers. (aka narks)

But yeah. The real cops are, in fact real cops. They really arrested a guy in front of the library because he was drunk, and they really do cop-y things all the time. We've even got a detective or two.

Most of the time, though, they do parking ticket stuff. And that's because they do a good job kicking all the crime off campus. We live in a bad town, yet we have a very safe campus.
